Beyond Spec: What Do You Collect & Why?

I can see a lot of similarities between our stories, Espada.

I also grew up in a somewhat religious home. I say somewhat because I also grew up with divorced parents, so my mom drug me to church and my dad didn’t care as much…

… however my dad did view comics as a waste of time, not going to be worth anything, etc. It wasn’t that he was against comics or forbid them, but he didn’t encourage them (or video games) either. That is a big reason why it was a HUGE shock when he bought me Batman at that Safeway grocery store. Also why I never owned any comics until I was about 21-22 and I picked up Brubaker’s Vol 5 run of Captain America from issue 34.

When I went to college my mom said she wanted all my comics out of the house. I didn’t have nearly as many as I do now. My dad said no. He said keep them at the house. Dad veto won out and I ended up keeping them in my old room. Mom never argued with me. From there I had a series of small apartments that could never house them all. Finally I got the last box of comics out of my moms house about a year ago. She was happy to have them gone. I can say my dad always saw the value. He collected clocks and picked up ones cheap that were broken but of value and had them repaired. He would sell off clocks from time to time for extra money.

Pun intended?

Somethings maintain or appreciate in value as time goes on. There is a certain brand of cast iron skillet that sells VERY well.

This sums up just about anything now…

I’m in a Reddit group dedicated to thrift shop finds and this one person is always posting about their journey to various thrift shops after certain skillets they buy and then sell for absurd sums of money. They just drive around America buying skillets at flea markets, antique shops, garage sales, etc.

Wow, I learn something new every day. skilletsheatingup dot com could be a figurative AND a literal thing.

Anthony, I also had to move my books the first time I moved out and luckily I found a place with a garage. In the last 10 years I have moved four times. The most I have ever moved. Most recently from SoCal to Tn. and I think I am ready to downsize in major ways after all those moves.

What do you all think about selling off quantity to obtain a few quality keys?

I have about 80 short boxes and I am thinking of unloading about 60 of them to buy specific comics that were the keys growing up.

The Manga or Anime

I like Anime and Manga, but I am way behind on most of it. I will probably get to Bleach one day. I find I only have time for one manga at a time…and right now I am on a big Junji Ito kick.

Why do you ask?

I was going off your screen name. Espadas were a group of bad guys in the show.

Have you read Solo Leveling? Man that manga is so F$@%&N good.

Not aware of that. It is part of my last name and part of my first combined.

Also spanish for ‘Sword.’
