See Dan Mora, buy Dan Mora.
I was scrolling through reddit and saw a post saying that DC spec is dead. I laughed and posted there are certain books by certain artists that you can find in back issue bins and sell for good money. Just need to know which ones.
The guy came back and was like “yeah right”
I laughed and said I wasn’t telling because I don’t want to ruin it for my friends.
The whole thing made me laugh.
Say nothing to Reddit
I said nothing but had to laugh about it.
Depends on what you consider “spec”. There is spec and there are flips. A lot of the DC books we grab from bins here are not in hopes of future increase (spec) but immediate revenue (flips).
But I think we’ve done a good job identifying the trends to where we can narrow down what books are worth a flyer or scouting.
From a character perspective, I think there is a lot of potential with James Gunn’s universe and it’s just starting. But he loves obscure B/C characters…many go back to the silver or golden age…so it will takes some patience and a little luck to hit on those going forward.
But all-in-all, when people ask me about my strategy, I say look for the books no one else is looking for. If you’re chasing top 10 or 20 lists you are usually too late to the game, and playing catchup.
I also think all this exists in two separate worlds (online selling & in person/con selling).
I never see these books selling at the online rates at cons or in shops. At least for me.
Do you even see these at cons or shops?
I think shops/dealers are not paying attention, and thus don’t even offer them. Thats why we find them in back-issue bins for cover or less.
Also, Shops/dealers can only feature so many books on their walls or cases….so they tend to go with what most recognize, vice taking a risk on the niche/long shot books.
Yeah, I don’t expect any Pumkin Spicy on dealers walls at NYCC. But it’s possible I may come across them while searching through bins. That’s if @Bill doesn’t beat me to them.
There’s a comic speculation Subreddit and it’s often just people posting absolute garbage books saying they inherited them or picked them up somewhere and asking if they’re rich. It’s depressing.
Yes. Or post some crap 90’s book in bad condition and ask if they should have it graded.
I also know the difference between spec and flipping. But in this case they said DC spec was dead after seeing Red Hood pop and Spicy Pumpkin cover pop. While one was not foreseeable the other one certainly was.
That’s why I appreciate the CHU crew so much. I love that this group is genuinely interested in helping others make some $$$. Smart people here are able to predict things that probably 98% of comic collectors cannot.
I was implying that the person you were talking to may be using the wrong term for what they were talking about. Were they complaining they couldn’t find books to flip , or there wasn’t anything worth holding on to
I honestly don’t buy any DC to hold onto anymore. Marvel
Maybe a copy here or there.
I buy a lot of Dc Gold and Silver aged books.
I recently started putting together a run of the Adam Hughes covers of Fairest. Easy set with great covers.
@D-Rog
I did actually, which is sort of what made me think on it. I was at a con recently where a dealer had a pretty significant chunk of his wall devoted to these books. He had them priced very fairly but they are all still certainly costly (the Putri Red Hoods, Nightwing books, Robins books).
We actually discussed them both before show open and after. They just didn’t move & had little interest. He’s going to move them online.
A tiny perspective of course.
I’m setting up next weekend for my once a year show & will have tons. I absolutely price stuff low and I’ll report out what sells.
The majority of the Nightwing/Red Hood/Mora stuff that I sell is overseas.
Chinawing.
In all reality, NYCC is all about Exclusives, OA, and Celebrity signings for last many many years for me.
This year, I will be targeting Veefriends booth. They have some “interesting stuff” going on I’ve learned. If you know; you know
@Bill
I’d love to hear a report out after the con about Veefriends please. It’s an interesting hobby/brand. It gets ridiculed by so many, yet value continues to rise. I’m going to hold the sealed hobby box I have which has easily doubled in value since I bought it.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the last “sticker” set but it still did well.
Thanks for any news, hype reports you observe!!
You got it bud.
This will be the 1st year since NYCC’s 1st that I won’t be going 3 or 4 days.
Unfortunately, I have to travel to Chicago for the long weekend for my son’s Chicago Marathon.
So, all my work has to get done on Thursday
Kids first (even in their 30’s)
And yes, this Veefriends is a very hot brand that is being overlooked imo.
