Dirty D's F.O.C

Hey everyone. Quick FOC article this week. Not going to drag this out…jumping right in.

COVERS

image

DC X Sonic the Hedgehog #3 (of 5)
I think it was last week we got a variant featuring Sonic as Flash…this week we get the rest of the gang in superhero costumes. I was a big Sonic fan back in the Sega Genesis days…but don’t ask me who is in which costume…

But I do think this is a cool cover and could be a hit down the road, should there be a cross over game or something. For that reason this is the Dirty D

Cover of the Week.

Archie is Mr. Justice #4 (of 4) (Killing Joke Homage Variant)
I don’t know much about Archie…much less this series. But I do know a Killing Joke homage when I see one. So this one is for those who collect such things.

image

Spider-Girl #1 (Momoko Marvel Rivals Variant)

Straight from the pages of Spider-Boy, Spider-GIRL now gets her own series. Will anyone care? Probably not. But some may care for these Momoko Marvel Rivals variant covers. I believe this one is of Luna Snow (why it’s on a Spider-Girl covers…no clue). Luna has a much bigger following than Spider-Girl, I’m guessing though.

image

Superman Unlimited #1 (Cover C - Dell Otto Varant)
New Superman series, just in time for the movie. Pass. But some may not pass on Dell Otto covers, regardless of the book contained within. And it features Krypto! (Who’s a good boy!!!)

image

Vampirella (2025) #2 - Mark Spears ASM 602 Homage Variant
Not my favorite Spears covers, but I do like his choices in homages…particularly Amazing Spider-man classics.

NEW ONGOING & MINI SERIES

image

Death of the Silver Surfer #1
The SILVER SURFER returns to defend a war-ravaged Earth, but Norrin has a galaxy-sized target on his back. A new enemy will stop at nothing to steal away everything the Surfer is or ever will be. A single human life may be all that decides the Surfer’s salvation…or damnation. If the Surfer falls, who then wields the awesome Power Cosmic?
Not sure if this is a one shot or mini…can’t be an ongoing. I’ve found recent Surfer stories to be typically pretty good. Here are some preview pages.

image

Be Not Afraid #1
Cora Reims lived the isolated life of a simple farm girl until one fateful summer day, prophetic visions brought her a visitor made of pure light… an angel. In the aftermath, Cora gave birth to a child, a Nephilim: the offspring of an angel and a human woman, seemingly imbued with evil itself. 17 years later, that child’s cherubic appearance can no longer hide his monstrous nature. Frogs boil in their skins as he passes. Crops rot. The townspeople live in fear, knowing that atrocities follow closely behind him. Now, on the eve of his 18th birthday, Cora receives a new vision… Heaven itself has called upon her to destroy the abomination born of her own flesh and blood.
From BOOM!. There’s an unlockable virgin variant of this covers as well. Some preview pages can be found here.

image

Circuits Seduction Revenge #1 (Cover C - MHAN Variant)
In 2049 a tech billionaire CEO/not-so-secret criminal finds himself hunted by his own hacked pleasure-droid as the past returns to haunt him in this mature readers cyber-punk action series!
New series by Devil’s Due. I can see the bondage cover being a popular choice.

image

Detective KaiJu #1 (of 4)
Detective Kaiju’s past catches up with him when the body of an old friend is discovered in South Faerbraun. Now he must face the demons of his past while investigating the unusual murder.
Fan favorite from the What Not comic series “Quested”.

image

Sleep #1 (OF 8)
When Jonathan Reason falls asleep, he becomes…something else. Every night, it stalks his quiet town, killing (seemingly) indiscriminately. When he wakes, covered in blood, our story begins. This new horror mystery shows us the horrifying waking hours of an unwilling part-time killer.
See the main site for a 4 page preview of this book.

PICK OF THE WEEK

image

Giant Size X-Men #1 (Spoiler Variant)

Giant Size X-Men #1 Apparently, a backup story by Al Ewing and Sara Pichelli in this book will introduce/reveal a new mutant…a never-before-seen mutant who was invited to join the All-New, All-Different X-Men!
The character appears to be on the Luciano Vecchio spoiler variant cover. This book might catch a few off guard… For that reason we’ll make this book the Dirty D pick of the week!

Parting Thoughts

That’s it for this week! Happy reading!

Issue 2. Really great covers so far!

That’s cool for sure.

Hey CHU Nation.

Another quick FOC article here. Not much for spec. A few nice covers. Not much for new Indy books either. But lets run through the highlights.

COVERS

Harley Quinn #51 (Supersmash-Up Variant)

Not sure if I’ve ever seen a Superman/Harley mashup before.

image

Jeff The Landshark #1 (Artgerm Marvel Rivals Variant)

Jeff’s first starring miniseries! Join Jeff as he teams up with many of the friends he’s made over the years and out smarts more than a few rivals along the way…and this time, he’s got some all-new abilities on his side!

Jeff Spec is likely wanning. But it’s rare to see an Artgerm cover that isn’t a young female (with the same face). So there’s that.

FACSIMILES

All-New Collectors Edition #58 (Facsimile Foil Variant)

Wow, these collectors editions can be expensive…not sure where people store them. I guess some are expensive. This is the second appearance of Black Adam, I believe.

SPOILER ALERT

image

All New Venom #7 (Spoiler Variant)

If Flash Thompson doesn’t take down the new Venom, his superiors will make sure it’s Dylan Brock who pays the price. But now that Flash knows who the new Venom is, can he pull the trigger on the human being underneath? And if he can’t…which sinister Spider-villain is waiting in the wings to do it for him?

Not sure what this is spoiling. Is Mary Jane going to marry Venom?

image

Amazing Spider-Man #5 (Spoiler Variant)

As HOBGOBLIN’s assault tears SPIDER-MAN’s mind (and limbs) apart, Kingsley unleashes his wrath on those nearest and dearest to Peter Parker. And this is a deadly race against time Spider-Man can’t afford to lose - even as he risks losing his sanity to win!

Not expecting this to spoil a new character, but you never know.

READS

Void Rivals #19

A STANDALONE SKUXXOID EPIC. The breakout fan-favorite of the Energon Universe takes center stage. Who is Skuxxoid? What is Skuxxoid? This issue answers all your burning questions and more! Plus, the FIRST APPEARANCE of Wreck-Gar and the Junkions!

Void Rivals has been a good read so far. And it’s not necessarily because they’ve been weaving in Transformers and GI Joe universes. It’s original characters and story make for a pretty good story.

But this issue focuses on Skuxxoid…a character that made some appearances in the 3rd Season of the cartoon (post Movie characters, space epics). He was kind of an annoying little guy. So much that in 40 years none of the comics touched this character until Void Rivals came a long, from what I can tell (if you don’t count the manga comics). Void Rivals has given the guy new life and purpose. Now this issue dives into the character’s origin, it would seem.

But don’t buy into the whole “first appearance of Wreck-Gar and the Junkions.” Wreck-Gar made an appearance in the Transformers: The Movie #2 (Marvel), and so did many of the Junkions (he’s the guy that speaks in the form of TV one-liners, we’ll see if they keep that trait). Then also made many other appearances in the Marvel UK magazine. So this is just a “Energon Universe” first. Unless they create a new Junkion. You never know.

Nonetheless, Cover B features Wreck-Gar.

Void Rivals - Cover B Variant (Wreck-Gar)

INDY SPOTLIGHT

GODDAM Tragedy #1 (One Shot)

A vicious and vengeful account of one of the Old West’s darkest episodes from those that lived to tell it in a lavishly painted, entirely self-contained 48-page graphic novella! Ellen Janson is here to set the record straight about the highly publicized, oft-sensationalized journey her family undertook in 1846. Ellen sets out with her mother, Irena, and her father, Leo, on the treacherous road west in search of a better life. But when her father chooses to split off from the party, taking an untested shortcut through the mountains, can their small family survive the elements, the wildlife-and each other? Or will their journey become nothing more than another goddamn tragedy?

Not much stood out this week from the Indy circuit. This one seems to have some buzz. It’s a little more pricey than other books at $6.99, but it’s a one-and-done deal.

Parting Thoughts

Yeah, nothing really to spectacular from covers, first appearances or pick of the week. Just typical fun stuff. See you next week!

I actually love that Jeff cover.

Happy Mother’s Day!! Are there any mom’s out there in the CHU-verse? Maybe they’re lurking.

I’ll warn you now…some ok covers, some spoiler covers and a few new books. Not much else. But here are some books to consider for pre-order this FOC.

COVERS

Spawn #365 (Cover C - Mark Spears Variant)

Looks like Mr. Spears is back doing Spawn covers?

Pop Kill #4 (JSC Explicit Variant)

Going to be a popular cover. Descriptions says “explicit” so the preview art must not be final art (?).

Thundercats #16 (TMNT Homage Variant)

For those fans who collect homages of TMNT #1 (Mirage).

SPOILER ALERT

image

Deadpool Wolverine #6 (Spoiler Variant)

FURY! STRYFE and WOLVERINE embark on the next phase of their apocalyptic mission - but not if NICK FURY SR. has something to say about it! Meanwhile, DEADPOOL has a new plan that can’t possibly make things worse… Then again, it is Deadpool we’re talking about…

Doubt this is spoiling a new character on the cover. But you never know. It’s a Whilce Portacio cover, so there’s that.

image

Giant Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1 (Spoiler Variant)

The past isn’t set in stone. Kamala Khan is locked in a battle through time against an unstable and unleashed Legion - and she’s gone from the frying pan into the Phoenix fire. As the history we know is destroyed in front of her eyes, the new mutant must team up with Jean Grey in her darkest hour…and master her dangerous new mutant power! X-Hivemind LANZING and KELLY team with superstar ROD REIS for a cosmic, emotional story that turns history upside down. PLUS: A Revelations backup story that reveals the hidden secret that binds Scott Summer and Jean Grey together, as written by Steve Foxe!

So now Saga’s get Giant Size one shots? Assuming the spoiler is the “hidden secret” reveal. It is a Staphanie Hans cover, so there’s that…

New Avengers #1 (Spoiler Homage Variant)

Carnage. The Hulk. Namor. Clea. Wolverine. Five of the most dangerous loners and antiheroes in the Marvel Universe. Nothing could make them work together…but Bucky Barnes and the Black Widow are going to give it a shot. Demented duplicates of the Illuminati are threatening the world, and if they figure out how to work together, they’ll be as unstoppable as the originals. Bucky and Natasha need allies who will do anything to take the duplicates out - but wrangling a team of killers and monsters presents its own dangers. Welcome to the New Avengers - hope you survive the experience!

This one is a spoiler AND a homage. But they already revealed the cover, so not much of a spoiler now. The description already calls them a team. I don’t get it.

FIRST APPEARANCES

Giant Size Amazing Spider-Man #1

Summer starts with a bang with GIANT-SIZE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1! Kevin Smith makes his triumphant return to Marvel with a Spider-Man story that will have your heart beating in overdrive and your sides hurting from how much you’re laughing. As if that wasn’t enough, Al Ewing and Mark Buckingham spin a decade-spanning adventure with Spider-Man and some of his best friends! And if that weren’t enough, Chip Zdarsky and CAFU introduce a brand-new character who will play a big role in the future of Marvel Comics! Don’t miss it!

New character is called Rapid (hit the CHU FOC Mega Topic forum thread if you want to see the reveal). Now why didn’t THIS book get a spoiler cover? Watch out for the 2nd print 1:25, first cover…calling it now…

NEW SERIES

Marvel Rivals: Ignite #1

Hot off the debut of MARVEL RIVALS, Peach Momoko designed a wave of costumes bringing the Marvel Heroes to Japan! FIRST: SAI takes on the symbiotic chaos of VENOM! YUJI KAKU brings Frank Castle - the unbeatable PUNISHER - face-to-face with…PENI PARKER?! Where Peni is, SP//dr isn’t far behind… PLUS: K-Pop star LUNA SNOW is brought to the depths of HEL/ASGARD and right into the hands of HELA!

Written by Peach herself (you’ve been warned).

Runaways #1 (of 5)

Superstar writer Rainbow Rowell (SHE-HULK) returns to the Runaways with visionary artist Elena Casagrande (BLACK WIDOW, BLADE) for a new chapter…but Marvel’s best and scrappiest found family has seen better days! Nico Minoru has lost her girlfriend, her best friend and her magic. With Karolina, Chase and Alex all out of the picture, Gert’s doing her best to shake the remaining Runaways out of running on autopilot. But when Doctor Doom tries to reclaim one of their own - Doombot! - it’s time to start running…

New limited series.

Parting Thoughts

So, yeah, nothing really standing out for picks of the week. Just an average week, with a few covers and maybe some good reads. Have a great week!

Thought I read somewhere Whilce basically retired. Clearly, that was incorrect.

‘spoiler’ is the new ‘not final art’

No kidding, seems odd that is the spoiler, doesn’t spoil anything and there is no trade dress. Makes me wonder if the source is wrong, although it is a Hans cover…

some store is doing a exclusive virgin

Not necessarily good as a, “Spoiler,” but I love the cover itself. Awesome art!

seems like Jean has a sister Sara Grey and looks to be kicking it to Scott. That could be the spoiler but im only guessing.

Well, there’s collecting retirement, and there’s actually no longer working retirement…he’s probably the former. Doing some side work for Marvel, perhaps.

It certainly spoiled any hope it might be something good…

I don’t know. I feel like without the spoiler treatment this cover would attract many looks. It is after all a Stephanie Hans cover. Not my thing, but she does have her fans. ‘foc reveal’ would have been an appropriate name, and hype would build in a fair way. The result would be a favorable response to the art itself.

The Comic Mint is promoting a version of the Hans Spoiler cover as a store exclusive.
