eBay Headaches

If your claiming taxes on your sells (as you should be already) then you can write it off. If your skipping out entirely on taxes my only advice is don’t talk about such things on a public forum.

I do declare all sales and dont make enough to claim any write-off. Only claim the standard deduction.

I just accept returns and accept this as part of selling on eBay. Even when it is Bullshit or not. I rarely have this happen.

I’ve worked at Target for over a decade and they lose 1-2 billion annually in damages, theft, etc. I was amazed at just how much waste there is. A big chunk of it is ordering to much of items that have an expiration date.

Like I said, it’s just part of being a “retailer”… whether you small or big, when you start selling anything on a platform, you are now a retailer of some type on some level.

Yes, if the purchases and losses are small enough, doing the standard makes sense in such cases.

Where I work - a technology company - the only time we see no.s that high (if rarely) are when we do returns on a product that fails or malfunctions - as that would be our fault. Do we see damages in transportation ? Once in a while, and those are insured. Losses due to theft - those would be investigated, and strong action taken. The company would strongly investigate ANY other losses, to keep them down.
Again, I’ll take yours and Poyos words that Best Buy and Target lose that much $$$, but at my company that does not happen. For example, the TFAW issue with distribution and shipping would be strongly addressed. I understand that TFAW may not have many options, so may be that influences their decisions.
My company expects a certain performance level from our products and expects this from our customers, suppliers, distributors, etc. Our customers expect the same from us. Certain unforseen losses are to be expected but any huge losses above a few thousand will draw strong reactions. Right now our eyes are on material suppliers - as material prices have risen significantly. There are strong safety implications for our products, and we cant take the risk of problems.
Just want to stress, that I am not tooting my own horn, or my company - I’m just a cog, and not a decision maker, but I’ve sat in meetings where these are debated. Also, not a business major. These losses are like a revenue stream by themselves if they are controlled.
My company is not a ~100 billion $ company like Best Buy or Target, so may be the loss amounts mentioned may not be a big deal to them, but to my company it means a lot.
Coming back to my point and my case, I make significantly less than any company, so MY business model suits ME ! I cannot do a ‘return as you feel’ model. Everyone should do their own ! There is no one size fits all !

Genuinely curious though - what do you classify as losses for selling on Ebay ?

Any return where you have to cover cost of return shipping is a loss. If the comic was damaged and the worth is now a loss, is considered a loss as you can’t sell at full price.

But I no longer sell on eBay nor have I ever had a return due to damages (poyo’s packing is rock solid).

Thanks, I need to keep an eye on this but so far - too few.

Your last statement does not count two additional points:

  1. it does not stop a buyer from claiming its damaged
  2. assuming you sell on a private site (Ebay, etc.), the final arbiter is usually the site, in most cases.

I am going to investigate MyComicshop , as they seem to have some protections in place for sellers. There is a discussion going on, on the CGC Forums, about his topic. Of course, there are pros and cons.

Also, again to be fair to Ebay, they’ve helped me out for the most part when I’ve had issues with buyers. And the majority of buyers are good !

This kinda thing really annoys me. It also represents someone I would never ever buy comics from. Your showing in the pic that you don’t know how to handle comics. It also shows they don’t understand that putting the book down will make a better less shaky picture.

I’m really annoyed & unhappy with ebays new item condition requirement which is mandatory starting next year. I have no issues with listing an items condition but some of the terms they use for condition are the same as what’s used for grading comics. Still no issue until you realize that the definitions are way off. It’s just going to lead to more item not as described cases. Christ we already have grading in the item specifics. I’m going to be contacting eBay about the same terms being used and how the definition of each aren’t nowhere near the same. How it will lead to more problems for everyone. I’d suggest anyone else who sells on eBay to do the same. If enough people point out the differences and problems it will cause maybe they will make it voluntary or at least use comic grades instead.

Wowwww

Not comics related.

The SOLD listings for the Pokemon Oreos is definitely shilled. Soooo many 0% feedback scores…I’ve never seen anything like it.

Will CGC grade cookies now? If so, do they taste them to make sure someone is not trying to pass off a counterfeit hydrox disguised as an Oreo?

Apparently people are grading and slabbing VHS tapes now. Everybody’s clawing for things to grade and sell to suckers.

I think this is pretty stupid. Is it as stupid as I think it is or am I just out of touch? Is this the new boom or am I right to think it’s a sucker’s game?

As I mentioned in another thread, I really like old technology so I have some VHS tapes. I kind of understand wanting to preserve them as some of them are so fragile and old. In some ways I think it’s a bit against the spirit of VHS to try to make them some kind of valuable collectible though. Then again I treat Comics like valuable collectibles sometimes so perhaps I should keep my mouth shut? I don’t know, in other words.

When I ordered my latest pre-order Lumineers Vinyl’s they put up a week or so back, they also had/are making a cassette tape for their new album. I had to buy, only $15. Now I’m gonna have to get me a tape player…

I have an embarrassing amount of versions of Star Wars VHS tapes. Am I going to grade them, though? No, that’s dumb.
