Modern Comics Heating Up (Those With Potential Too) (Part 1)

when’s the last time we saw a marvel 3rd print?

But you are correct…so many will have jumped on the 2nd print bandwagon a 3rd print will turn a lot of people off sitting with stacks of the 2nd print they can’t move. Possibly making for a low print run.

But then people will think the same and then order so many 3rd prints lol

Not as many as you’d think. So many are likely going heavy into the 2nd looking for a quick flip, the disappointment will turn them off to another round…

last year Marvel a 3rd print for Ghost Rider #1

Im guessing, because of the demand for the 2nd print 1:25s, that there will be a 3rd print.

Now, stores will be sitting on the regular 2nd print for awhile, but it is a new cover…

who knows…

Timeless #1 from 2021 is a good example of that. 2nd print was over ordered due to the miss minutes b&w and is pretty much worthless, the 3rd print is only slightly less worthless than the 2nd print.

The 3rd print is a good one to have if any of the new characters on there pan out. They haven’t yet, so that’s why it’s slightly less worthless.

Ya I have a few of those 3rd prints laying around. I’m insulating my attic with the 2nd print. j/k

Exactly.

A good case study for this is Strange Academy.

The price points for Spider-Boy and Strange Academy are fairly similar at this stage of release. People who chased the Strange Academy 2nd prints saw them cap out for a short time at around $10-$15 because there were so many. While the First Print went from $30-$40 during this stage to ultimately $150+ for a raw copy.

IMO…Timeless #1 3rd print is the book to have over the 1st print.

Buy what you like and buy what others are buying. When you see demand start to exceed supplies but only if you can buy for cover or cheaper than the going market value. Print runs only matter when demand goes up making availability a factor. There could be a million printed and if 2 million want a copy while only 250k are available for sale, boom… demand creates value. We should stop focusing so much on initial print runs cause when those are hyped, it’s called artificial demand based on FOMO.

Not a good comparison as strange academy came out during the height of covid shutdowns. People were staying in and stores were closed down. Strange academy is its own beast and you can’t make an accurate comparison of it to any other book really.

You and @Venomismypassion both have a point tho. Strange Academy did make a splash, then kinda cooled, but then roared back during COVID lockdowns.

I’ve never really looked at Strange Academy from the Covid perspective, outside of the First Print Wal-Mart variants.

Can you elaborate?

For my PC, I like the first print color miss minutes covers. All other covers do nothing for me.

I think I have a 3rd print (or two) so just let me know when the fomo hits so I can move them…

I call it the ASM 300 effect.

Could even call it the Spawn #1 effect, but ASM came first.

Yup. Demand is what pushes value. If there is no demand, then print runs, availability and whatever else is moot. You could have a one of a kind in the universe and while you think it’s worth billions, if no one wants it, then it’s actually worthless… But if everyone in the universe wants it, then well… supply vs demand!

Strange Academy first hit in March amid a respectable buzz initially but that was right when Covid starting really hitting and lock downs ensued in many places.

Issue #2 was supposed to hit the next month but ultimately it was delayed and didn’t hit till July. For many folks who either had access or the desire to buy it up…it allowed for stockpiling over May/June. The problem was that most stores were closed and many just didn’t have their minds on comics. People weren’t worried about buying up comics at that time.

When the #2 hit in early July…everyone suddenly was clamoring for issue #1 so it had a double whammy of interest and in most places, that sudden craze made shops (who still had them sitting on shelves hide them away or immediately raise the price. Folks couldn’t raid shops to get them in most cases.

It really was a unique situation. I recall watching many online sales at the time where shops were selling the #2 with constant statements “do you have #1” to go with it.

I’m not saying there weren’t copies out there of course. It just wasn’t as easy to get them (for everyone) so the folks that could get access to shops often had a field day with them.

I personally bought the 1:50 and two copies of the 1:25 from Discount Comic Book Service for well below ratio about a month after release. I know others that did the same.

That was my take on the situation anyway.

That’s why Black Winter also kind of took off. It was a slow build up and then Covid delayed issues from issue 3 and 4 when Diamond shut down operations for that month or two… all the books were delayed and then when things started shipping again, people were clamoring for Thor’s driving up the prices going nutso for Black Winter.
