Modern Comics Heating Up (Those With Potential Too) (Part 1)

I remember going to conventions shortly after the first Ultimate comic line was introduced over twenty years ago. Ultimate Spider-man and Ultimate X-men were both very hot and were going for pretty big premiums. People couldn’t get enough of them and rightly so. They very good at the beginning. A few years later, the exact opposite. The comics weren’t as good and demand dried up. People buying any of the new Ultimate line for long term spec/investment would do better spending the same money on something else. Short term, sure. Personal collection, of course, but long term value, probably not.

Ultimate Spider-Man was on my radar for a long time cuz my little one was into Spider-Man. But man the prices at one point went all the way to $300 for raw. I never got him a 1st print but was able to get the reprints at lower prices and he was just happy to read them lol. The same thing happened with Ultimate Fallout 4. I got him a cheap readers copy before I got him his 9.6.

There are about 20 cheaper copies. There’s a NM copy that’s an OBO and priced less than half what mine was.

Perhaps your book was in a higher grade or condition? :man_shrugging:

All my books are 9.8s.

But I don’t know how you can tell it’s better than all 20 books listed cheaper by the photos.

I’m just that reputable a seller, I suppose….

Time to start calling my favorite shops and asking for a copy to be held next week…

Oh no. What’s happening isn’t possible, according to some

Possible or not, I wanna get me some cheddar.

You do realize there’s only, like 8 ebay sellers, selling the books, with stock photos…

Majority of stores wont start listing until Monday or Tuesday.

When you have that few sellers, jacking up prices, idiots with FOMO will buy…

Again, this is the Ultimate Spider-man effect, with no bearing on the story…

FOMO can always happen if there are just a few sellers and people panic buying before the book comes out.

Needless to say I like to make money so I asked my shop today to put a copy aside for me.

Sorry, @monopolyjackson but I’m with the people who are thinking this one might become a hit too. If it turns out I’m wrong you shall have bragging rights.

There is definitely a lack of copies, all covers, on online shops. Everyone that pre-sells is basically sold out…at least the 10 or so I know of.

This was basically what USM1 was by Thursday evening.

What if like to know is what is @BJ seeing. He was the one that clued me in that something was up with USM1 when he couldn’t meet his customer’s demand the very next day. Is the distributor sold out? Is he already getting calls about it?

It’s been that way for weeks

The piggyback spec hype from USM 1 is going to make UBP 1 a hit. The hype and FOMO process is underway.

All covers are listed as out of stock at Diamond. All covers show in stock at Penguin Random House and they just accepted an order for 20 A covers like they did with those 30 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #1 NIC KLEIN variants which I’ve almost sold out of.

Noone has asked for UBP1 in store and I really doubt anyone will but we’ll see if the phone starts ringing next week. The current Black Panther titles never sell so I ordered light initially on UBP1.

Also, even though the ratio’s can’t be ordered now, it appears Diamond is still having open order Marvel ratio sales so they may be available in the next year. They had part 2 of their current Marvel Ratio Sale Thursday and I loaded up. It’s nice to be able to go back and order more ratio’s than you did A covers originally.

*Update, the confirmation e-mail shows the 20 A Covers as back ordered so they may not ship. I’ll have to call PRH directly tomorrow to verify on the phone.

Down periscope. Silent running resumes.

@bj my local shop went heavy on reorders of the Nick Klein covers, they have about 100 of them that they are selling off.

Yes. But unlike USM1 it’s going to not be due to the story or character, but just pure FOMO as speculators and flippers will dry the well…this one crashes quickly, I think.

Unless the story is actually really good and it’s a hit with the readers. Marvel has been on a small role as of late…
