It was simply a general statement, not aimed at distributors …
One thing that should be considered is this … 40% of my new comic orders are DC … the loss of that will, conceptually, reduce my discount from what Diamond has left to order … the new distributors have their own discount levels, which will unlikely allow me the same discount I got from Diamond since the volume is less … less volume from Diamond / less discount … less volume from new distributor / less discount …
This drives up the cost of doing business, thus adding to the additional cost of shipping …
Now, I’m seriously thinking about using a mail order service such as DCBS, having them ship all DC product once a month for a flat $7.50 … I am trying to work out the best discount possible vs volume and comparing those … if I go that route, I will simply inform my DC pull and holds that they will get all books once a month …
Anyone’s thoughts on that would be appreciated …
This is the way comic books end.
This is the way comic books end.
This is the way comic books end.
Not with a bang but a whimper.
@Uncle_Willie
In regards to DCBS…I’ve utilized them for a few years. I do monthly shipments. I know this makes many shudder. I primarily get my books via my LCS, but use DCBS as a back-up/safeguard. I also use them to go heavy on a book & for Omnibus purchases. The discounts are just too big to go any other route. I’ve also found they will intermittently clear inventory & will put up books long since passed for cover.
I like their listings/ordering system. It’s easy to review & make sure I’m not missing something. I.e…I’ll do a search on Josh Middleton & every book will show up.
My books have always come extremely well packaged, no damages, & quickly.
Also…I don’t know if it is a gesture of goodwill, or a goof, but a few times I’ve been sent the expensive variants 1:50s vs a regular a cover.
Just my .02…Regards!
Don’t worry friends Marvel will follow suit and self distribute with orders through their theme parks and resorts. You’ll be able to redeem your digital copies on Disney +. They’ll will do this for about a year and tank the division like their video game division and sell character rights to other publishers instead of making comics themselves.
Thanks … I think you see where I’m coming from as a shop owner … working out the math is where I’m at and making a rational choice to still get the books with the least amount of addition cost, even if that means using an outfit like DCBS as a consumer order, once a month delivery …
I don’t think I’ll lose any major Pull & Holds, most all my customers have been with me a long time and once the product starts coming in, if they can’t pay for it all at once, I’ll float them for every week or every other week as long as I get paid in full before the next months worth comes in …
I’m simply trying to look at alternatives at this point …
Alana … who knows … ?? You may be closer to the truth than we know …
End Result A: Things work out great, the increased competition makes Diamond work harder and DC’s methods do well too.
End Result B: The end of the Direct Market as we know it, comics as an industry collapses or nears collapse.
End Result C: Things just kinda settle-out okay and not too much shifts.
None of these links are working!
And wouldn’t it be www.comicscoolingdown.net?
Maybe www.legosheatingup.com will get some …
Heh… I’ve seriously neglected that poor site…
For those of you that might like to take the time to read some ancient History, here is a piece by John Workman from the old Comics Journal in 1997 … it’s quite prophetic in some respects …
And, a follow up by Kurt Busiek …
Boom distribution is moving to PRH… guess it was just a matter of time since they bought them.
Diamond certainly not helping their case by botching delivery for the past 3 weeks consolidating warehouses.
They have not that’s for sure…
Diamond is more like a glorified reseller of comics nowadays. I wouldn’t even consider them a full fledged distributor any longer…
I heard it wasn’t because of warehouses consolidation but they let some higher ups go.
How does letting higher ups go mess with shipping?
You’d think they’d be a bit far removed from warehouse goings on.
Internal sabotage from an angry exec?
