Discipline gameplans will help you weather storms… keep on following your gameplan!
Although i shouldnt say this publicly since i own slabs to unload; but with the census gains over the last couple years, i question real demand in the future for most (not all) slabs. Census numbers just keep going up & up & up significantly. Has anyone looked at Modern keys? Ooofa. 9.8’s increase? - no problem.
I just dont know where the new demand will come from. New collectors? New geeks? Wall streeters? If you’re one who typically buys slabs just to resell, id get out of that market faster than a jackrabbit. I never bought slabs before; and now i REALLY wont be buying them. Golden Age and early Silver is probably the only outlier to my thinking due to true scarcity.
Long term I think things will be fine for slabs. Probably even a hedge for inflation. I see the hobby growing long term.
It’s the next 12-24 months that concerns me.
I don’t think all those store variants/exclusive app and Con variants will be OK…
Real books just have to weather the storm for now. Those that survive will be long term winners.
Key bronze and SA, and anything GA is pretty safe. Im buying up raw modern DC keys because many of them are dirt cheap. All of these slabbed modern books of non keys are going to be practically unsellable for a long, long time.
Like I said earlier there is weakness across the board but if the price makes sense have to pull trigger.
DC strategy is worth a play as low risk buyins in the right books. If Gunn 1st DC project is a hit then market might turn.
To me Peacemaker I was sold on way before Gunn took new position.
I agree slabs will be fine.
What i was trying to say (and probably didnt come out right) is i wouldnt be purchasing already slabbed. Id still get a raw book slabbed.
I think its a mistake in the present to buy a slab now with the sole purpose of turning it around in the short term
I really think someday the DC market will come more in line with Marvel. So many key characters from the past 45 years are a fraction of the value of equivalent Marvel ones.
Kiteman from the Harley cartoon on HBO was hilarious heck all those characters were not bad to watch in animation format.
Gunn has to bring his A game and Marvel might get worried.
This I agree. At this rate point 2023 may be a slow year…may not even get a 1099 from eBay for 2023 if my sales trends continue.
I’m still getting out bid on eBay with respectable bids, so the bottom is definitely not in yet.
I’ve got my “wish list” and keep an eye on books I want for the PC. I do like to buy slabbed Copper/Bronze or earlier just so I can have a third party verify there have been no touch ups to the books. I’ve been burned in the past getting a raw from eBay I sent in come back with a pink CGC label. Im not taking that chance on a Strange Tales 89 or Hulk 181.
It’s nuts to see your books’ value bleeding out a little bit more every day. I wonder how many people who got into collecting during the bubble of 2020 have already tried to get out. You can’t blame them for panicking, though.
Just remember in a bad economy print runs dip so first appearances coming out in new comics during the recession will get a bump sometime in the next decade.
Great point. By the way, Alana, it’s been a while since we’ve seen some Alana’s spec picks. Got anything in the works?
I’m going to do a DC cheap spec list as requested probably by the end of the week. Pretty much retired from selling comics due to how slow it is so shouldn’t conflict.
That will be a pretty long list!
Gunn has the reputation and previous success to really bring the DCU to the same level or close to the same level as what Marvel has done the past decade plus. Lobo is right up his alley. I can see him finally bringing Mister Miracle to the big screen. Deamon would be cool to see too.
I haven’t moved a book in weeks. It has been terrible.
I’d highly recommend renting a table at a small local show nearby for anyone with slow sales. They usually go for $50 - $75 per 6 foot table. If that’s not available, do a flea market. If not that, a church sale or equivalent. And if none of that - lastly your own yard sale or a community yard sale.
As I mentioned earlier - yea it’s a day of your life (10 a.m. - Afternoon), but all that $2 - $3 drek just goes… it goes. Combine that with a bunch of $5 & $10 sales and you’ve got a winner for the day.
I’m telling ya peeps love it because of No Shipping fees, Point to point contact where they can see the book, they can negotiate a bulk deal, etc…
Sales will be brisk and people just don’t want to pay that $5/6/7/8 shipping fee for a 3 dollar book. I know I sure don’t
I’m a bit fearful for the shop by me that really, really exploded (in a positive way) over the course of COVID and drastically increased their store size, renovations, and inventory. The significantly branched out in terms of toys/books/graphic novels and such and I’m really thinking they are going to end up in trouble. Their store is really full of product and it is the stuff I just don’t see folks buying all that much. It’s a double edge sword I guess. They do a fantastic job of having essentially every single book that comes to market, but I think they aren’t going to be able to sell them.
Perhaps not and I wish them the best as they try hard, but I think it could have been a bad move.
Their comic back issues/graded books (which was always the bread and butter) are pretty overpriced as well which isn’t going to help now.
