New weird Chip Zdarsky book from DSTRLY is out this week too. “White House Robot Romance.” It is a DSTRLY book tho so not much spec heat, probably. Folks dislike the magazine size but I dig it.

I like Chip’s work but I don’t see DSTLRY books moving much at all. One place is blowing all their stock out at $1 a book. Great reads and great art, but the format is a killer.

I buy just about any DSTLRY book when I see them for $1. Really great reads for the most part. But I’m not interested at $9/book.
Yeah, “White Boat,” has had two of its three issues come out. Amazing read. DSTLRY books have zero spec tho.
I assume these stories could be told in a regular comic book format…so they must’ve done some research or analysis which concluded they would make more money charging $8.99 then the standard $3.99 or $4.99, even though they would sell significantly less copies in this format.
Otherwise it boggles my mind why they chose this approach…but I haven’t picked up a single issue to see what you get for 2x the standard comic.
I had an opportunity to grab a bunch at $1 each when a store in the mall was clearing stock, but even then I chose not to pick them up as storage is an issue.
It seems like they’re aiming more at a traditional book market with the size and pricing.
It would have been nice to see how the DSTLRY model worked in a normal sized book. I will say, the quality is exceptional. The writing, art, and physical paper is all A+. But, that larger format is just not all that appealing to comic collectors, myself included. Again, I haven’t paid full price for one of these yet, but I have a small stack now from dollar sales. If these were normal size and a more normal price, I’d probably have several on my pull list. But, maybe that’s just not financially viable.
