They do this for the fans, imo. These are toys that would never be put into mass production, and are made available for the fans, if interested.
Most of these price points, and box sizes, would never ever make it to a retail shelf.
The reason, imo, why the Rancor and Skystriker didn’t fund is because of the weak tiers, and the fact that both these toys already have several other options on the market. You can buy a complete original Skystriker on eBay for about $200. 
yep, the rancor unlocks and price were killers, hard for people to justify paying $50 more than the razor crest for a rancor.

Ouch.
I know there were way less made, but just sold my Haslab Jabba’s Sail Barge for 3K. That ship lasted what, 20 minutes on screen before they blew it up?

As cool as the Razor Crest is, I sold my haslab. No room literally anywhere for that.
