I met him twice
1st was the old Museum of Comic Art in Rye, NY maybe like 30 something years ago - it went without incident and obtained alot of free autographs on X-Men books (and others).
2nd time was at SDCC a bunch of years ago. I wanted an autograph on the interior of one of the books and he was aggravated and let me know he was aggravated that I was wasting his time. Total time for me to open the book was about 3 seconds.
So yea - my experience in one case was not a friendly one at all. Curmudgeon seemed to be an understatement at SDCC that day.
All that said, the guy is somewhat of a legend in comics and eating a little crow for a minute … well … y’know.
I could have sworn he said something once about not liking that people wanted to mark up the covers now when for years, signing on the inside was the norm. I may be wrong.
I never met him but I do own a book he signed…. on the inside title page.
Yea - I think I remember that.
In my particular case that day, he was “in a routine”.
Person put the book down. He signed cover
Repeat
Repeat
Then I come along and had the gall to open a book (it was actually a Marvel Masterworks hardcover) and his arm coming up with pen and down routine was broken. Not happy.
All I could think of when I walked away was to get off the lawn
Windsor Smith, who lives/lived not far from me and have met on several occasions; and actually talked to for a lengthy period of time; is another that carries an aura of “tread carefully”.
Let’s just say there are certain topics that release his inner self
Not sure about Wolverine.
But bring up the topic of his original art from comics; and in particular the value, and it gets ugly.
Bring up grading comics - yikes.
I did both and found out - yikes
