Modern Comics Heating Up (Those With Potential Too) (Part 1)

Per his newsletter, Tynion leaving Batman with #117 and Joker with #14 - let the dumping (probably) commence.

The last couple of months have been extremely surreal and gratifying.

I launched my highest selling original comic book series yet with THE NICE HOUSE ON THE LAKE at DC Black Label. News got out that my best-selling horror comic, SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN, is in development at Netflix with Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy’s Intrepid Pictures. And we announced that Boom Studios and I are launching the first spin-off title in the “Slaughterverse” with HOUSE OF SLAUGHTER. Over at Image Comics, my conspiracy thriller THE DEPARTMENT OF TRUTH hit sales highs approaching our original launch numbers for Issues #10 and 11 (turns out people like Bigfoot!), while we continued to develop the project for television with the fine people at Sister. I’ve also been having some extremely exciting conversations about the future of my Young Adult series, WYND, in comics and other media that I can’t talk about just yet…

And then, a few weeks back, I found out that I had been given one of the top accolades in the comic book field, winning the award for BEST WRITER at the Eisner Awards.

But in the midst of all of that, I was trying to make one of the most difficult decisions of my professional life. DC had presented me with a three-year renewal of my exclusive contract, with the intent of me working on Batman for the bulk of that time. I was grateful of the offer, but I couldn’t help but look at the success of my original, creator owned titles and wonder if it was the right choice.

And then I received another contract. The best I’ve ever been given in a decade as a professional comic book writer. A grant from Substack to create a new slate of original comic book properties directly on their platform, that my co-creators and I would own completely, with Substack taking none of the intellectual property rights, or even the publishing rights.

Given my bandwidth, I knew I could only pick one of two contracts sitting in front of me.

Which is a lot of preamble to say that I am going to be leaving BATMAN with Issue #117 in November, and THE JOKER with Issue #14 next April, with no immediate plans to write any other superhero comics in the near future.

Instead, I’m going to dedicate my whole brain to building a bunch of really cool stuff on my own terms, without having to get permission from any publisher to make it.

Edit: I never said I was “ok” with that listing. Not sure where you interpreted that.

Have at it. Not sure what this will prove. I don’t do things like this and my overwhelmingly glowing, positive reviews prove it.

I’d put the word facsimile in my title, but it certainly wouldn’t prove I was scamming someone if I didn’t.

This book was released 46 years ago. If people can’t figure out they’re looking at a brand new comic that says it was released in 2021. That is on them. Period.

I just got a great deal on a comic on ebay, hope it isn’t missing pages as I should have known better than to expect a great deal so the seller has no responsibility to be honest (sarcasm).

Why would this cause dumping? No more super-hero comics coming from Tynion means the ones he made will be more sought after, not less.

“I also want to say one more thing on the Batman front… I can’t say enough incredible things about working with Jorge Jimenez and Guillem March, and the entire Batman editorial team this past year. In ten years of working with the company, it’s been the best and most exciting time to work in Gotham City. I also want to say I’ve had conversations with the editors and creators continuing to work in the line, and I can tell you that right now there are still plans to continue the stories of the characters we’ve created over the last few years. Finally, I want to say that I know who is following me on Batman, and what they have planned for you, and I can assure you that the Batmobile is in incredible hands.”

new creators tend to try and bring their own creations on board (like Tynion did with Punchline, Clownhunter, Miracle Molly, etc), so they current slate will more than likely be put on the back burner for a few years,

I have them as a keep and hold in my bins, but I can see a lot of the spec market dumping to chase the next big thing

I’m sorry that happened to you

I hear you, but I don’t think that will be the case here. You never know though.

I mean, what are Mr Bloom, Gotham and Gotham Girl and other newer characters introduced in the Snyder and King runs up to now?

This makes sense on a level. Writer works for DC/Marvel or other Publisher, makes a name for themselves. Get enough followers to go on to do their own thing so they have full creative control while also benefiting more revenue instead of “publisher” cutting them check.

Probably a reason why I love doing 1099 contract work over W2 salary position. As contractor, I’m sort of my own boss while working a salaried position, you got pointy haired bosses telling you what, when, where, etc…

Soooo, anyone know any modern comics heating up? Tony just posted that Gun Honey got optioned for TV… weeks before FOC. Orders will definitely increase.

Spider-Gwen 1 1:25 McFarlane homage by Nick Bradshaw

Meh. I like issue 25 (2nd print) sooooo much better. I get SM1 is iconic and homaged 1000x over, but IMO ASM 316 is a 1000x more classic a cover.

I wonder how the 1:25 compares to the 25 2nd print is guess-timated print run.

I splurged on that not too long ago. One of my decisions that I’m still happy with.

I know Mr. Bloom is gonna be in that new Task Force Z comic. It’s for dead characters who are brought back as half-alive zombies and want to be returned to full-life by doing missions. Jason Todd is the only fully alive member and leads the team. I added it to my pull as it sounds batshit crazy.

You continue to miss the point.

No one said you, or any else here, was ‘scamming’ anyone.
The point is: the sellers mentioned above, selling facsimiles while attempting to hide the fact they are facsimiles, are being deceitful. You think the deceit is par for the course, and instead of being upset with a deceitful seller, you’re insisting that the seller is doing nothing wrong, and if a buyer is fooled by the sellers deceit, then you think the seller is without fault. That is the issue here, imo. You think the grifters act is par for the course, and that it is an acceptable selling practice.

It’s not acceptable, it’s expected. Just become a more educated consumer. The ad says 2021 publish date. Period.

I’m not missing the point, you just don’t see the other side of yours. All good. You don’t have to be able to prove a point on the internet to have one.

The sold listings for this book are just wild. If the title has facsimile in it, the going rate is near cover. If it says “send to CGC” the going rate is three digits. It’s almost like sellers know that buyers are having trouble distinguishing this and are taking advantage of it

I bet you a $100 that the winning bids on both of those auctions were made by people who have no intention of paying and were bidding to protect fellow comic collectors.

I’d find that hard to believe someone would risk getting “no payment” strikes on their accounts just to protect others… I’d say, very unlikely but kudos if someone was who also has way too much free time on their hands.
