Modern Comics Heating Up (Those With Potential Too) (Part 1)

Yes I agree, but real first appearance collectors won’t be satisfied with a later appearance and calling it a first appearance. This has happened before most think Swordmaster first appears in Agents of Atlas #2 however he has a previous appearance in a Chinese Korean distributed book Warriors Of The Three Sovereigns #1 which would probably go for huge dollars if one was ever listed.

pretty sure it was a web comic, they wernt actually printed, if i remember correctly the company who did them released them online first and had planned to print them but they sold the company before that ever happened

True but this character doesn’t seem like it will have the fan base to absorb a million+ copies.

I agree with this too. Some will want both. But which one will have the greater long term value? I do see this kind of character in other media. Just like Gwen.

It will be the Deadpool B&W comic as you stated.

There’s usually technicalities and confusion with first appearances, which all of us are used to. The manga is in a foreign language, different format and massively printed. I read that the first volume was reprinted in Japan, so you can bet that they printed an abundance for the second volume.

I guess it could be safe to get both, but I’m personally not interested in anything that isn’t in a US comic book format.

What Manga are you reading right now? What anime are you watching? My family and I are huge fans of Manga and Anime.

Currently watching the Shaman King remake since I grew up watching the original way back in the day. As far as manga I’m gonna check out air gear

The mangas are too bulky to be slabbed, so what I did when the creators visited was to get the cover signed and slab it

I love Winston Duke, but I am not sure how reliable GFR is. That said, I’m gonna try to scoop up a copy for a good price…

I always notice this too. I actually walked into Newbury comics today while at the mall w the fam. Comic wall was just me and another guy, mangas were at the front of the store and kids were grabbing at them. If you know how to flip these things, please share

Btw, I scored a strange academy 13 magik variant as a reward for navigating around all those gross teenagers and their emotions.

Wow…the bevy of buyers on eBay the last 48hrs hope you are wrong. That book went nuclear on the “Bay”…crazy…

Because we live in a impulse buying world rather than a sit back, analyze and think about your purchase type of world…

Which book is this?

Avengers 62.

I love anime and manga. I have been personally collecting manga for some time now, and saw that some people are discussing collecting manga, so I thought I will briefly share my experience here. It can get convoluted for non-Japanese readers for sure. I know it was for me because I don’t read the language, but I love the stories so much I wanted to collect them.

First and foremost, If you want to get real technical, then you would want to go for the digests, like Weekly Shonen Jump for any 1st appearances or key events, because that’s traditionally and usually when the story is published for the very first time. For example, the first episode/chapter of One Piece is in Weekly Shonen Jump No. 34 1997, so that would be the one you want to get. The confusing thing about One Piece, however, is that there’s a prototype story for it that was published earlier, and because One Piece was so popular the entire digest got reprints. You can ignore those. Back when COVID-19 started, One Piece 1st chapter was around $250. I think the price has gone up by now…These digests are very thick! They’re about 270+ pages, which is kind of nice because you get more stories, but not so nice, because they’re harder to store in boxes. I store mine on bookshelves. The spines are cool to look at. There are no bags and boards for digest size manga, so I had to cut Mylar bags open and gift-wrap my digests to protect them.

Also beware, some series started out as web comics, so you’ll have to do your own research. For example, these days with digital manga, Shuiesha, the publisher of Shonen Jump has the Jump+ app. If I’m correct, Deadpool Samurai was first published on Jump+. That means the first printed format would have to be the tankobon, the printed volumes in Japanese, similar to our trades in the US. But more warnings…a popular series can have multiple printings of tankobon. You’ll never know the printing edition until you open up the manga…For example, I remember when One Punch Man got popular, I looked for a Japanese One Punch Man vol. 1 (because I believe One Punch Man started out as a webcomic as well), and the one I got was a 5th printing…For a super popular series in Japan, like Case Closed/Detective Conan, the 1st volume is already at around 100th printing, hah…

One last thing before I close out my comment. DON’T SPEC ON MANGA unless it’s already a popular and well established series. The reason being, while it costs approx. $3.50 to $4.00 to buy a digest like Shonen Jump in Japan (whoa! 270+ pages for $3.50!), it cost at least $20 on eBay for any given Shonen Jump. They’re typically shipped from Japan. Additionally, Shonen Jump is very cutthroat. They’ll ruthlessly cancel any series if it’s not popular. Shuiesha does reader survey to get a sense of the readership on their series.

Hope this helps. And thanks for reading my long and confusing reply. Like I said, collecting manga for 1st appearances can get confusing. Always happy to bounce ideas and share more if anyone else is interested.
