Modern Comics Heating Up (Those With Potential Too) (Part 2)

I didn’t read the 3rd issue yet but this sounds ominous.

Tfaw still has issue 2 (ultimate X-men) available at the 30% discounted price. I put 1 of each cover just in case the character takes off.

So many images these days reminds of CG based ala ArtGerm, Derrick Chow ( I think), Sozomaika, and so many more. I mean they look good but it feels so heavy handed CG based and now seems like painted cover / sketch work seems to be lost in today’s cover.

ALA Franciso Mattina. Speaking of which, what ever happened to him. There was fiasco years ago where he ripped off / sampled other artist work. Now I don’t know where he is at…

Least according to Alex Garner. There’s more scandal if you do some googling… By the way another CG based drawing lol.

Martina does Spawn covers fairly regularly and DC covers here and there as well. Mostly Batman that I see.

He does some dynamite covers too now and then, him and Parillo.

My issue with Mattina is that all his art feels too similar. Just dark in tone. I have the same issue with Artgerm, Derek Chew, Monika, Rose Besch, etc. A lot of it just feels like you have to be an anime or manga fan to “get it”.

I will say that I really liked Besch’s Hallow’s Eve cover and Momoko’s Eternals 7 cover.

I used to really like Mattina’s work, but not so much now.

I see autocorrect got you too.

Momoko is a hit or miss. From what I have noticed is that if she is rushed, we get poop Carnage cover. But if she takes her time, we get her beautiful Black Cat #1 cover :heart_eyes::heart_eyes:

I’ve told this story on here before and will say again - saw Mattina do a Thanos commission for $1K at NYCC many years back.

Came back hours later to see it completed (and done by hand by Mattina) and it was just an abysmal drawing that looked nothing like his computer produced work.

That was it for me like so many others who don’t know what a pen and ink is.

First cover?

When you do it purely CG, it easier for me to copy and paste previous images or other work and adjust accordingly. Now I have a new cover ;D.

Some years back, my wife got me a tablet to learn digital cuz that was the “new in.” I sucked so bad lol. So I just use it to color drawings cuz buying art supplies is getting more expensive…

Arrived safely shipped with the Lunar order for next week instead of directly from Image. Now to see what the cheapest copy on e-Bay is currently so we can start nailing down an asking price.

Every copy of Transformers #6 has a wrinkle/crease in the center of the back cover apparently prior to printing.

Let’s see how Anthony spec spins this into a 20 dollar bill.

Error copy. Bonus line. I kid. I kid.

The good news keeps on rolling today.
By Using Sight Beyond Sight, I was able to turn the free Spawn #350 which we settled on $300 for into a stack of Thundercats #2 next week, 1st Calica. While Sight Beyond Sight was still active I also took a shot and ordered ratio’s based on the other covers that weren’t ratio’s as well as including those 30 Calica covers so I’ve got a heard of ratio’s coming as well. Apparently the Foils didn’t count so I’m not getting the 50 or as many as I budgeted for with the smaller number ratio’s and the Foils also apparently discount 10% less than the other covers but it still turns out that the total is still small enough that with shipping added I should already be profitable on spawn #350 and Thundercats #2 before they even get here next week even if none of the Thundercats sell which I can’t imagine happening.

Now to figure out what to roll Thundercats #2 proceeds into, maybe Red Bands?

I love seeing your store strategy play out here. Very interesting.

Do you do any bonuses/freebies for your pull subscribers? One idea I had: My primary story has signing events sometimes. Usually free events. And, they have a billion newer/modern dollar books laying around from those creators. Why not have your creator sign 10-20 of those dollar books, and just slip one into random pull list folders?

Next time the customer picks up their books, there’s a signed freebie in there. The shop is just losing $1 on expected revenue, and showing your best customers some love would go a long way.

Again, random thought.
