He doesn’t get all the credit for Image Comics, that was a pretty significant group.
But I’m talking about actual comic book work, art/writing,etc, not just simply being on the board of a comic publisher running more daily operations where all the creative work is being done by the comic book creators.
Also, if you read the history, they sort of didn’t start from scratch either, basically piggy backing off Malibu Comics. So yeah, these 7 people kicked off Image Comics but it’s not like they started from scratch. The one thing noteworthy here is they set the standard for artists to have an outlet to own their creations rather than working for DC or Marvel where they owned none of their ideas.
What’s funny to think about is, if these creators didn’t work for DC or Marvel, would they have been able to jump ship with their notoriety from Marvel and DC to launch Image Comics? My Magic Eight Ball says… probably not… one could easily argue Marvel Comics shitty pay and contracts to likely creators paved the way to Image Comics success…
Some tend to also forget, McFarlane did like 700+ submissions of artwork before anyone ever gave him a chance at actual paid work.
It’s also funny to think that when some employees went to create a union, Image Comics didn’t want to recognize the union.
Ironic to think that the creation of Image Comics was due to Marvel and DC not recognizing the creators and employees, them demanding more rights, pay, etc. Now the tables have turned and Image Comics is/was against such things, the very same type of concept that kicked off their own company, they just didn’t start a union but instead started a new company that ran more like a democracy and or co-operative.
