As I type this I just got another sale. It was for a golden age Marvel Masterworks. Been a selling machine today!
I haven’t been doing yard sales as much as shops sales. But with that being said I am more of a flipper than a speculator any more.
I haven’t done the garage sale bit very much. Do you just plan a weekend morning and randomly hit a ton in hopes of finding books?
I get a good portion of my inventory from local comic shows. I am lucky where I am at that most of the year there are two a month and I am able to get good dollar books or get good deals on books that I am able to move no problem. I mainly move keys and books that people are looking for. I don’t think any of my sales this year are from new releases, it just is not worth the chase for me. I do get lucky at yard sales and such every once in a while. I got a full run of Aikira this year for $2 a book. You just have to have an eye for things that people are looking for. I have killed it this year with out of print trades. Those are probably my biggest sales and most of the time people don’t even look at them.
I’ve been picking up Joes for $4, flipping for $15-$20. Two of my 7 sales were Joes this weekend. I’m almost out IDW Joes…I do have some Baroness RI covers, but those are PC….for now.
I have a really good collection of Joe’s. I don’t want to sell yet but it may be about that time. Need to move the Invincibles first.
I rarely buy for spec anymore. If I do its a book I’m ok with as a PC book if I’m stuck with it…and I usually dont pay for than $1 or $2 at that.
Flip it, or forget it.
OOP Trades are an untapped resource. I appreciate when people share what sells well.
Right now what I’m searching for
Transformers More than Meets the Eye (IDW)
Transformers Lost Light
Mr & Mrs X
Haven’t found any yet in months of searching.

I sold 2 copies of this last month. Transformers Shattered Glass Tpb. I had it up for $199.99 OBO. There have been sales for $200-225. Got these 2 from my honey hole for $17.99 each. Put it up for $199.99 to see what happens. Sold the first one within a few days with tons of viewers/watchers. Got a $150 offer, thought about it and accepted it. Figured I got my money back and much more so I could just sit on the other with better offers. Got sent $175 for the next one and was just happy to sell it since I got it for so cheap. I could’ve probably held out for more but I just want to move stuff at this point and don’t want to sit on stuff to get top dollar.
I was asked a few days ago (by a friend) what my strategy is when I go to conventions, shops or shows. I say I look for what everyone else is not looking for, but what is selling.
No one has Dan Mora and Putri books on their radar, although I think Putri keys have been featured on some apps and now tougher to find. Some of those odd ball Nightwing variants…Marvel Adventures Skottie Young covers.
At local shows with small vendors I can find some Simpsons, Sonic incentive ratios and Teen Titans Go keys cheap sometimes. That Simpsons #4 is gold when I find it with the card insert. No one thinks to open up that book.
I let everyone else waste their time frantically searching for West Coast Avengers 35. Sure, If I find one I’ll grab it, but not going out of my way.
I also look for High grade Thundercats and Transformers books. Especially newsstands. Haven’t had much success. Before vendors didn’t bother as I was the only person looking…now some vendors are putting them in their bins, but not NM+ copies. I’m willing to pay good $$ for 9.8 candidates, but most copies have been beat to hell and back sitting in bins without boards for so long.
Damn. Adding that to my list.
I found a shop that had just about all the retailer exclusive covers for that series (vol 1 & 2). The ones that came with the Hasbro toys you special orders. They were still in the polybag. Paid $5ea…sold for $20-$25 each. Still have one left.
Sort of like the transformers version of Star Treks Mirror universe. Optimus is evil, Megatron is good.
The other thing I need to make a list of is Neal Adams covers. Mainly Batman, Detective, green lantern and DC horror. Some of these you won’t ever find for cheap at conventions, but the occasional flea market or back issue bin sometimes.
Its nice to see TPBs (and hopefully hardcovers next) go for a pretty penny
2 things every wed & thurs that i do:
-
Craigslist. Still incredible for yard sales. And make sure you search “comic” and " comics". You get different results.
-
DM every yard sale in your area. Yes EVERY one. Ask if they have comics for those that dont mention they have comics. This gets you 1st dibs over all the other competitors/hobbyists. 19 of 20 times i get no response or “no” but my biggest hits have been that 1 in 20 that doesnt list comics but DMs me that they do
Edit: with both above, always ask if you can see them on an earlier day than the yard sale date
One of those Transformer Windblade sales was mine. Out of print Transformer trades, Indy trades that they may have only had one printing, and obscure characters like the Question tend to be the ones that have the most value.
Out of print English version Manga can go for some big money as well, but those are harder to find.
Also I want to thank the members here. It always seem like one of us is ahead of the curve and helps others out.
Yes, continue to help me everyone! Only me!
