Odds and Ends

Loved him on Brooklyn 99… lol.

Lately, I have more results with comics, going to card shows, toy shows, etc
While certainly not the amount of comics, the cards and toy vendors often have a box or so of comics they just want to get rid of.
They typically have zero idea of what they have.
Sometimes it’s a box full of warriors of Plasm, other times it’s a jackpot.

Sometimes going to the shows where comics are an aspect but not the main focus can result in finding some vendors selling a wide range of things including comic that are priced superbly for their value. Or absolute junk as you said, you never know.

The title/premise got me to click, but it gets even more interesting near the end around the 13:00 mark as he lays out his theory on shilling.

Hmmmm… I’m absolutely sure there is some scamming going on out there. 100%. There are too many assholes on this planet for this hobby to be devoid of this.

But, I’m still skeptical. Especially of this guy’s theory. The idea that someone would be willing to take a $20,000 hit on ebay fees repeatedly in an attempt to artificially drive up prices so that they can sell their (in his example) 100 copies of Hulk 181 graded as a 9.8 seems a bit of a reach to me.

Of course, it’s possible. However, if the movie Contact taught us anything, it’s that Occam’s Razor says the simplest answer is usually the most likely. I tend to think enough older dudes with massive resources finally bought a book they always loved (and deemed a viable investment). Hell, Nick Cage alone probably bought a few of these.

I saw that.

I don’t know anything about cards, but WhatNot is totally addictive, for me at least.

I spent about $600 in the last 2 months on whatnot. I’m not saying $600 is a lot of money, but I haven’t been spending that yearly on FOC books. Tons of deals on <$50 books. The big books I’m looking for usually cost way more than comps. I’m trying to find a $200 book to use my chase 25% off offer on, but it’s a struggle.

I used to sell and buy on Whatnot a lot. Not as much these days. I’ll check it out sometimes, but not too often.

I want to do a big sale on Whatnot, just blow through some of my extra sale stock to thin it out, like a $1 or $2 start kind of thing. But not sure I can even pull in an audience any more.

I’m bored. Curious what everyone’s procedure is for taking pics of comics for Ebay, Mercari, etc. For me anything under $20 it gets a front and back pic and that’s it unless it’s an older book then I’ll snap an interior pic for page color. Anything over $20 I’ve been doing front, back and all four corners front and back. Some sellers are only taking front and back on higher priced books and they are selling. What say you?

I take front, back, and the two spine corners of both front and back (6 total) unless there are blatant problems I feel should get another angle. I do this regardless of the value; it takes only a few seconds more. But I’m not selling hundreds of items so the extra time isn’t a big impact.

I only take front and back pictures these days unless there is any type of issue with the book. If there is anything, I will take photos of the area(s) of issue. I’m also always willing to take more and send them if asked.

I do high res scans of front and back and provide additional images upon request.

Front, back, and that’s it. If I get a request to take more pics, I usually will if they ask politely. If they seem like they’re gonna be a problem buyer (demanding a ton of pics) I just ignore them or block them. I don’t need stress.

I do front and all four corners. If it is not a black cover or one that smudges easily I may do the back.

:100:

I only do front back and maybe some spine closeups at most. If it’s a cheap book, nothing over $100, I won’t take the time to take more pics if requested… that’s just eating up time on a sale that might not even happen in most cases. But usually if the book is over $100, I’m already including as many detailed pics as possible.

For Raw:
Typically (not always) Full Front, Full Back, 4 Corners Front, 4 Corners back, Full Spine from the side
And a description of my eyeball observations of defects within the description.

If it’s around a $4/$5 book, then just front and back covers.
But I rarely sell books of this value.

For Slabs:
I steal the CGC pictures

The very few slabs I sold, its like 3 pictures… front, back and closeup of the label so they can see the details on it.
