Odds and Ends

I got my shipment from PRH and saw them in another LCS

I found them to be very sparse right out of the gate, but did get a couple.

No, it was not.

  • DC – 41.29%
  • Marvel – 28.62%
  • Image – 19.07%
  • IDW – 2.99%
  • Titan – 1.98%
  • Boom – 1.81%
  • Mad Cave – 1.19%
  • Dark Horse – 1.09%
  • Ignition – 1.02%
  • Oni – 0.95%

Check out these latest market share data from bleeding stool. What’s shocking is Marvel only has a 9% lead over Image. I don’t ever remember Image having this much of a market share ever (19%) even when they were hitting on all cylinders with the popularity of Saga at its peak.

Not sure if this has anything to do with Image or that Marvel has completely cratered creatively and driving away fans. I really don’t think this Midnight Universe is going to save them.

This data is consistent with what I see at my main LCS (the biggest in my city). Piles and piles of DC books and a few copies here and there of Marvel.

Marvel had been in the tank for a while. Creatively it has sucked. Dc taking the lead of market share was proof. Image puts out quality books. They deserve to take the lead.

DC has taken the lead in market share before in the past. I remember when I was getting back into comics DC had “rebirth” and “new 52” and it was an exciting time for DC. Every new DC book was a hit as they were putting out great content. That eventually didn’t last and Marvel would eventually take over the market share again. This time feels different which is why I’ve always advocated for CB Cebulski to go, he’s been a disaster.

The thing that surprises me is how Image has almost 20% of the market share. This is unbelievable to me. Image has always put out great books. When I first got back into comics it was Image who pulled me back in, Stray Bullets, Saga, Rat Queens, Five Ghosts, Sheltered, Lazarus, Walking Dead etc. All these books beats anything that Image is putting out these days imo but now Image is getting stronger than ever.

Here is an example. To shop at 14.1 oz it is more expensive to ship than at 16.1 ounce

14.1 ounce price to Georgia from Maryland

And the 1 lb 1 oz rate

Image has stepped up its game big time. Successful Ghost Machine and Energon Universe books. As well as some hits out of the gate with D’orc and Assorted Crisis of Events. And they have the Spawn Verse.

Marvel is only where it is because of branding. People love the characters, but the gimmicks and constant reboots can only take you
So far.

I feel like the Marvel comics have a lot riding on this Midnight stuff. The movies have EVERYTHING riding on Doomsday.

Radiant Black and its universe has a dedicated fanbase. Image keeps evolving and has been rewarded for it.

Bad move if you ask me… collectors love homages and most of those are pretty good, looks like money makers…

Is Chainkata #1 supposed to be a big deal? I have not heard much about it but I see Third Eye has 3 separate Store Exclusives for it (which is unusual for Third Eye)

Uh oh, someone called the Fun Police!

It’ll be interesting to see if interest drops a bit when people can’t keep going to the manga well.

Also, it’s a shame DC passed on Buzz’s Simonson homage, because it’s 500% better than many Absolute Batman variants that were approved.

It probably will be. Daniel Warren Johnson is a star now. People went ape for the ashcan.

Yup… let DC know, everyone keep talking about how big of a bonehead move this is so DC wakes up…

Man. The story seems kinda dumb, and the covers are meh. But, who knows.

Well sure, it’s Bleeding Stool after all…

Yeah. I was thinking the same when I saw it…then realized it was a post to say they were told they couldn’t do it.

Was interviewed today for a German collectibles YouTube show. Very interesting. It was sponsored by Veve the digital collecting platform that does marvel properties amongst others. Should be on in three weeks.
