Poyo's Spec & Drek for April 7th, 2021

Welcome to this weeks spec and drek, the 14th edition for 2021. This is where we pick the winners each week we (or shall I say myself) think will be spec worthy, a great read or just cool looking art on the cover. I also dive into the pesky drek, the book you should probably avoid if you can or perhaps not invest so heavily into.

Marvel Picks

I haven’t read or kept up with Immortal Hulk since around issue #25 but I really like this cover art for Immortal Hulk #45. Maybe I’ll try to bump it (the title) back up on the to read list as it’s fallen down on that list of books to get around to reading.

I’m also liking this homage cover… but is it me or does Hulk’s left eyebrow look little off (and huge)?

Immortal Hulk #45 (Bennett Homage Variant)

Star Wars High Republic #4. Do I need to explain? Didn’t think so. There’s also a Star Wars High Republic #4 (Bustos Variant) which isn’t terrible but it should have been used on the Adventures IDW title which is geared towards the chitlins…

Avengers #44 finally ends the story arc and presents us with the all new Phoenix. For some reason this has zero excitement around it for me.

King in Black #5 finally comes to a conclusion as well. The spoilers that were already leaked if true made this a little lackluster for me. Death means nothing so hold onto those Venom #3 (or sell them, sell them all to me for $20 a piece, I’ll take them all). Did I just spoil the potential spoiler?

DC Picks

DC is lacking once again this week. Nothing stands out except the Man-Bat #3 cover. Love the cover art to this one. I want to read it but I’m waiting for the trade to be honest as I didn’t anticipate any heat with this series.

Indie and Small Publisher Picks

Star Wars High Republic Adventures #3 is a no brainer pick up, particularly if you are a Star Wars fan. I almost like this story better than the Marvel title… Actually, scratch that, I do like it more currently.

Geiger #1 was a great first issue and read. I’m now anticipating the next issue.

Silver Coin #1 was another book I got an early review copy of and being a fan of Twilight Zone and Tales from the Crypt long ago, I’m on board with this title. Really looking forward to the next issue that is surrounded by this mysterious coin.

Why oh why is BRZRKR #1 2nd print a $100 book? Buy low, sell high. If you can find it at cover, great, buy just to flip the ■■■■■ and never look back! Also a quick glance at solds on eBay shows one sold at $115 and the next most recent was $59.95 or so. Because a couple likely sold for so high, why is every single seller listing this for so high that now has Midtown listing theirs for $100?

I might visit the shop this Wednesday in hopes of scoring some for cover and if I do, I’m gonna sell them for $1 each BIN now just to bring the FOMO inflated price down as a big FU to those like Midtown and their shitty ways!

I guess you can say BRZRKR #1 2nd print was also the drek pick for the week but we can’t really blame the book itself, the real drek is Midtown actually listing their copies for $100 each.

This shit is getting out of hand. Anyone getting a sniff of the early 90s all over again? I hope Midtown sits on their copies for a very long time…

Nottingham #2 is the next pick. The first issue is selling very well on the secondary and this one is pretty much sold out at most online retailers ahead of release. A Nottingham #2 Second Printing is already available for pre-order with new cover art.

It might not get the same love as ENIAC #1 but I’m hoping for a good read, that goes to Bad Idea’s next title to show up on the shelves, Tankers #1.

Been saying it for a few years now…the 90’s retailer pricing/gimmicks/publisher hype machine era is in full swing…and it’s disgusting. I guess people dont learn from past mistakes…

And for people to say whats going on now is nothing like what happened in the 90’s, I am NOT talking about retailers ordering 1,000,000 copies of a book and they cant get rid of them.

Jesse Livermore an old school Wall Street speculator once said:

“There is nothing new in Wall Street. There can’t be because speculation is as old as the hills. Whatever happens in the stock market today has happened before and will happen again.”

Wall Street, Comics, Sports Cards, Pokemon, Real Estate, Commodities, Crypto, All Speculation Etc… Human nature doesn’t change just the players change. Time will tell.

History always repeats itself… remember, our lives are very short in the cosmos… we are nothing but a quick flicker compared to how long the universe has been around… and we quickly forget because new generations are born every second…

The first two issues of, “Man-Bat,” were awesome. I can’t wait for #3!
