Remember Comics Values Monthly?

When I first started collecting comics back in 1987, I discovered this monthly price guide. Sure, there was overstreet, but you had to wait a whole year to know if your comics were appreciating in value.

But here was a guide that provided updates every month. And just as exciting as knowing the value of your books, was the top 100 comic book sales from the previous month, which was on the back. The list was based on orders through Diamond Distributors.

Sure it was cheap newspaper print. But it kept the price affordable for kids like me with minimal allowance to spend. It’s part of the nostalgia now. And it was always a surprise to see what comic would be featured on the cover.

It didn’t cover golden age, and pretty much stuck to DC, Marvel and popular independent titles.

I threw my copies out long ago. But recently added a copy to my MCS order to relive some of that nostalgia. So I grabbed the issue with FF #5.

I’ll share some snippets of the interior for fun and reminiscing. But figured I’d ask if anyone else picked this mag up back in the day.

Yes, I loved it when the comic shop got the newest copy in. I always bought them!

How did the Future picks do?

I looked forward CVM every month! I still have a lot of them.

Batman, Wolverine, Punisher and TMNT were good pick ups. Rock and Roll comics, not so much. Although now might be a good time to buy….

A nice return on the investment here…

When I started collecting, I don’t think AF15 was a $1000 book.

This will make @agentpoyo very happy. Back in my day, there were no “first appearance in cameo” or “First full appearance.” There was only “introductions” and “appearances.”

Introduction is actually a pretty good term. If you only see a figure in a shadow or a whole shot it doesn’t matter. It was the introduction of the character.

“But that’s still an appearance” - agentpoyo

Formal and informal introductions. That’s the follow on argument.

At least then you can bring in the “being named” aspect…because you kind of have to be introduced by name for it to be formal.

You’re forgetting the super formal introduction. That’s when you give somebody a big smooch on the lips.
