Spare a grade - Minor Staple Color rub (9.8 Candidate?)

Hello Team,

Reaching out today to inquire if I have a decent shot of trying to get a 9.8 with minor staple color rub.
I have heard from numerous places that you can get a CGC 9.8 with minor rub. So I would appreciate if anyone can share pics of CGC 9.8 with color rub(s).

Top Staple: Approx (<= 1/8) Color rub - teal color.
Bottom Staple: Approx (<= 1/4) Color rub - teal color.

I have a couple 9.8s with very blatant rubs, to the point that in both cases I was shocked at the grade. There’s no way to miss either. I would guess, rather unhelpfully, that you’d be at the mercy of the whims of whomever was looking at your book that day.

I personally would not call it a 9.8. But CGC just doesn’t care anymore…9.8s for everyone!!!

Thank you for your feedback. If you had to assign a grade, what would you assign?

I think it’s a strong 9.6. But on the right day could get 9.8 from cgc. Depends on the graders, sad to say.

But I still hear people are getting “banana bends” still…so should be more worried about if the book will come back undamaged.

Honestly, I was hoping for 9.8, but if I was truly non-bias, I say 9.6. I have heard and seen 9.8 with minor staple rub. I think that falls in that realm… due minor MFG defect. These days grading turn around is nightmare, so definitely want to make it worthwhile…

If the color transferred onto the cover from another book, you can use an absorene sponge to rub it off. Use light pressure. The white areas could benefit from that too.

This.

Who knows with that Trio of Emmit Kelly, Bozo and Clarabelle in Sarasota… and headed up by Pennywise.
9.8, 9.6, 8.5 - they just make sh*t up as they go along… if they even bother looking at moderns thoroughly anymore.

And then of course there is the “new” grade in the case after it’s bent.

Don’t worry, CGC is bringing in Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles to take over grading!

Just picked this (Unexpected #141) up. Would love the guys here to spare a grade. Biggest flaw are 2x 3 inch indent line , 1 x 2 inch indent line and a single “nail” press near the bottom edge. One slight color break is on the nail press shown. Since no major color is available but got long indent line with no color break. I’m estimate Fine+. What y’all take.

Pick it up for approx $18. (You guys think worth it…?) Worth pressing? Wish I open the bag before picking it up.

Maybe a VF as the indents don’t break cover, and seems
Like a very clean cover.

Being a black Nick Cardi cover with a lot of potential, I’d get it pressed…see how well it comes out… Not many for sale….if you can get it in the 9s might be a decent money maker…

Thank you for your feedback. D-Rog. U really thinks it’s a VF due to the non color break creases…. Didn’t know u knew the cover was done by Nick. U feel like DC Horror is still hot?

I always get confused between a F vs VF. Alway figure a long indent and crease would make a Fine regardless of color break… your right the book looked clean that I just rolled the dice….

I’ve had a book graded 9.0 and it had a circular impression (like someone sat a cup on it) that I missed. It wasn’t as noticeable as that, but it was a fairly large area.

I do think CGC does lean more favorable for non color breaks…otherwise they would not note them as such in the notes.

Are you sure that thumbnail breaks color? I’d give a press a shot. Too much potential there.

Being stickler about it. Slight fiber break, not full color break on “nail press” on edge of front cover, back cover bottom left with slight foxing / light stain ( Need ya expertise) on back I say. Haven’t got a chance to upload. Will do shortly.

As promised lol. Attached is the back cover.

Nice Nice book.
On the bottom back cover is that simple discoloration or a stain?

I wanna say discoloration because it doesn’t have ripple effect which is cause by stain / water damage.

Best thing would be to look at other fine grades in slabs and see what passes….think a lot passes for fine…this book just visually seems more appealing to me than what I would expect to see in a slab with a fine grade.

Foxing is a tough one to gage though…but in theory you can remove it without getting hit with restoration if done carefully. Hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet light. I’ve never toyed with it though.

Still see a lot of potential.

I’d still grab it for $20 without second thought.

I was watching a bid from ICE (eBay) - FINE copy just sold for $89… Do you think it a over bid? Personally I think mine is better. Thanks for your insight and your feedback. Just debating whether to keep it RAW or grading it after a PRESS.
