I recently, within the last 6 weeks, had an acquaintance who had 7 errors or mistakes in a 100 book modern CGC submission. I know that’s one hearsay example, but I also have been concerned about some 9.8s that I personally got back earlier this year from CGC. They really should not have been 9.8s, imo. This doesn’t, to me, appear to be an outlier.
First and only place I saw any mention of length of series limited or ongoing. Weird.
I think it was originally solicited as a 6 issue but changed to ongoing. I could be wrong but that is what I heard.
Has everyone seen some of the prices for the High Republic on eBay?
I would be surprised if this did not lead to an ongoing series.
This is the wholesale numbers from comichron for September 2020. Nine of the top ten books hit over 100K, with two titles going over 200k. I’d suspect that this Star Wars book will be over 200K as well.
Maybe so. I just suspect that with a sellout this early that whatever the orders are, it wasnt anywhere near high enough to meet demand. I doubt it will be as high as Three Jokers, with its really high ratio order incentives.
Yeah it was originally solicited as a six part series but changed to ongoing a few weeks in. That’s why our URL still says of 6 in it I believe.
My last modern submission of 25 had a book get damaged during the grading/encapsulation process slightly so it was 24 out of 25 9.8s.
The past year has been non-stop whining and complaining from the Modern submission and CPR (crack, dry clean and press, resub) crowd about CGC being too strict with its grading. Go on the boards there and look at all the threads started about it. The funny ones are those that are started by the CPR crowd since it is not as easy to get the grade bumps as it was a couple of years ago. Amateur dry clean and press jobs should not be rewarded, and those that are bitching about it don’t realize that they are telling the market that they do shoddy work.
Spread across three different open order covers, and taking into account SW rabid fan base, a print run of 200K may get sucked up pretty quickly.
This one will take a while to go up in value then if print runs are that high. People just starting to collect will think this is the one to collect, so everyone will be collecting it. Supply of collectors will most likely outweigh demand on the collection/investing market. Except maybe the Sway Variant.
I think the orders are going to come in lower than most of us initially expected. Remember, January tends to be a month when stores lower orders as well due to it being a bit of a dead month for new events traditionally and also due to customers being tapped out of funds after Boxing week purchases. Based on the research I have done the past two weeks, most stores underestimated demand significantly.
I wish I would have done more digging before FOC as I would have doubled my order. I don’t know where I would have stored the extra copies, but it would have been worth it.
You know there is a huge red flag when an online retailer presales it for 99 cents a copy, like one did.
that order was canceled
Oh, well we’ll see what happens with such a high print run. I don’t think it will be like Rick and Morty #1.
But since the order was cancelled, doesn’t that indicate the 99 cent price was a mistake?
Yeah I didn’t know that the order was canceled.
I don’t think you are going to make a fortune investing in this comic compared to the margin you can make with other comics if you can spot the right trends. I would think this would be a starter collector comic, so maybe there will be a ton of new collectors who want it, but its value may stay down below $100 for a 9.8 CGC for years. I don’t think the raw value will go up much either because of its supply for a long period. So unless you are selling batches of copies at a time for a great profit this comic isn’t worth a huge investment… Disney looked like it was releasing a ton of shows on Disney+ in the near future related to star wars, so some of the star wars comic news might die down because there will be way too many new characters flooding the shows. But again it is star wars, so it might be worth holding on to because star wars fans will pay anything for anything Star Wars.
If anyone is looking for copies of HR 1, contact Marc at Saddle City Comics in Calgary, Alberta. They do mail order.
The lack of 1:50 and 1:100 variants will keep the initial print run a little lower as well. I kind of figured there would be more store variants.
From what I’ve seen they’re not consistent though. They’re repeatedly grading books at grades that should not obtain such grades. Seems like if the wind changes direction, the grade can change. And trust me, I don’t like any of them. I keep my books raw… the only way to go! (I know, that sounded awful)…
