Star Wars: The High Republic

Is Darth Vader #20 variant the 1st appearance of Grogu?

First cover appearance on a comic book yes.

Someone in eBay said a trade paper back was his first.

“ The first Grogu comic cover and interior appearance is from the Graphic Novel published by Disney and Penguin Random House titled. Star Wars: The Mandalorian Season One Volume One (03/21).”

Is this worth spending on?

So, to set the record straight, yes the Screen Comix digest came first.

The interior is screen grabs of scenes from the Mandalorian. There’s no denying it is first.

However, there are those in the comic collecting community who do not want to buy and collect this type of thing, keeping the market and collectibility down.

For example, the Empire Strikes Back Marvel Illustrated edition digest is the first comic appearance of Boba Fett. Months before Star Wars 42. People pay hundreds for Star Wars 42 and you can find the ESB digest for $10-20.

What further detracts from the resale value of the Screen Comix is that the interior is stills of the show. Many want to collect traditional comic art on the inside.

You can get the Screen Comix on Amazon for $7.99 right now with free Prime delivery. I personally have about 5 copies as insurance in case people decide that’s the first they want instead of Darth Vader 20 Sprouse variant.

My money is on collectors preferring Darth Vader 20 Sprouse as the first comic book cover appearance.

And don’t forget there is plenty of Mandalorian/Grogu art on magazine covers like Star Wars insider that predate even the comix screen book as well as advertisements.

Just reinforcing DV 20 is a first mandalorian/Grogu art on a comic book front cover.

That’s a mouth full…and that’s what sh….um….never mind,

How is longterm spec on DV 20?

I think once the Mandalorian show has run it’s course no one is going to care all that much.

Unless Marvel runs with the two characters…or Grogu turns into some long running character in the SW universe, which is possible…

In other words…who knows?!

Thanks. I didn’t pre-order this cover and was deciding to spend the extra cash on it. Will probably pass. I usually have a rule not to chase but love Grogu.

I think you’ll have your chance to buy one for cover at an LCS on 2/16/22.

We discussed this in the “Modern Comics Heating Up” thread. In essence, the FOC was extended to January 11, instead of January 10. So the question is whether @faele got in with more orders by the extended deadline.

Seems like SW 20 has some heat. I preordered 1 copy from TFAW. Went by my LCS Wednesday after work. Probably 2 PM and they were all gone. Wish I had added a few more to the preorder.

Nothing new in the preview yet except the first naming of Jedi Younglings Gabino and Kaimo. They may have appeared in the background of earlier HRA issues. I need to look through and confirm whether or not this is a first.

Here’s my tip for the day:

Grab at least 1 copy of Galactic Bake-Off.

Inside, Kantam and Torben save the residents of a Jedi meditation retreat. The residents of this space station are elderly Jedi. At least two are named.

During the High Republic 1 year anniversary video on starwars.com, it was revealed that Phase 2 of High Republic would be a prequel series that occurred 150 years before the current High Republic events.

These first appearances of elderly Jedi might be referenced again in the next phase of High Republic.
