Thinning the collection

Sell lots. Sell runs. There are plenty of minis and runs that sell well and for good money.

Yup, throw together runs or lots. Don’t sell individual issues. Sell it at a good price and it will move. Lots and runs sell way better than individual non key issues.

I had bought a run of Groo comics from a long time ago for the PC. Figured it was time to thin my collection and move books that I didn’t think was necessary for me to keep.

I listed the full marvel run #1-120 and I kid you not, in the first hour of listing it had 527 views. I thought it was a glitch at first. Now I believe it was because I had a lot of international viewers from overseas.

I recently sold a 4 book lot of Dark Horse Groo to someone from Croatia. I didn’t even know people from Croatia knew who Groo was.

I never sold runs of books, how do you price runs of comics?

I haven’t followed through yet.

I believe, because 90% of what I want to move is NM or better, I’m just going to open a store a start listing books on eBay for $3 and use stock photos. It’s taking all the pictures that takes time…

Depends on the run and if there are any desirable keys in there. For example if you have a Hulk run with issue #340, it’s probably better to sell the key on it’s own. As it’s a lot faster and will reach buyers much more quickly. Hulk 340, 180, 181 are very desirable keys and there will be collectors who only want that key so I wouldn’t include them in a lot.

Sometimes sellers break the lot into smaller lots like 20-50 books to make it easier to sell.

Look up sold prices on lots from eBay to see how others price them in similar lots.

You can use an online price guide like comicbookrealm to look up individual prices for issues. It’s ok, that’s what my LCS uses to price issues/collections. It’s not always accurate because it won’t catch hot books that spiked because of movie news etc but it’s sufficient.

If it’s a silver age run of ASM with major keys in there you can contact an auction house like Heritage. Depending on your collection sometimes Heritage will even come to you to appraise your collection and go from there. You can work out a deal that’s fair for both of you.

If it’s a run like New Warriors and it doesn’t have much meaning to you, you can put up the whole run and sell it cheap depending on how badly you want to move it. I was at an LCS this week and they had a near complete run of New Warriors for $1 an issue. I was tempted, not going to lie. I have some fond memories of New Warriors  but I’m trying to buy less comics to thin out my collection. I’m about 10 short boxes now.

One more thing. Be prepared to offer deals on a run. Buyers will be more likely to purchase it if they can get a whole run or lot for a good deal. These are readers and they’re looking for a deal.

If it’s a high grade run of Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing then don’t do that. You’ll sell it and get a good price on it.
