Trade Paperbacks (and Hard Covers) Heating Up!

OK, who is going to start a TPB’s Heating Up thread? I think we might need one.

Done.

Is this true? Because I’ll sell mine for $120, lol

I recently picked up the single issues because of the early Jenny Frison artwork.

I checked one store yesterday and found none. Trying another place today.

I struck out at three places as well. LCS, a shop in the mall and Books-a-Million.

I wonder if a trip to Half Priced Books would be worth it looking for some hot TPB’s? I’ve never been to one.

I love HPB. Great place to find lots of cool comics and TPBs/hardcovers/knick-knacks.

I think it would be worth a try

I’ve found that they HPB pretty good with pricing TPBs to market and they also place stickers on the back of the TPBs, so there is a ceiling on the price you can get for them. Your best bet is your LCS or even a random B&N or other bookstore.

I’ve found a good amount of these hot trades in discount boxes at my LCS.

It seems like more and more comics shops are subscribing to Key Collector, so they are on top of hot books and pricing up those back issues. They do have a blind spot when it comes to TPBs.

Everything is worth it until it’s not

You’re welcome for that bit of advice.

Which is ironic because unless a shop lists the book on eBay, they are just losing a sale if they mark it up to eBay prices.

No one comes into a shop looking to pay eBay prices for a book. Nearly all are looking for the book at a bargain price to flip.

The only people paying eBay prices are people who don’t have a local shop, and therefore pay the online going price. Or they don’t have the time or patience to go to an LcS. They FOMO buy.

The ultimate irony is not only does the shop not make a sale on their marked up copy, they don’t adjust the price later when a book falls back to earth…so they never move the book because it’s always overpriced for whomever is walking through that door.

Rinse and repeat until you put yourself out of business.

My LCS has thousands of Trade paper backs and hard covers that line the walls. They have half the store lined with them. But they all seem to be newer. The old stuff sells or they clear it out.

There are newer ones that do well, it’s just a matter of when supply dries up at online book stores. Star Wars Epic Collection The Menace Revealed Vol. 2 (2019) sat at cover for a while until 1-2 years ago and then popped. My LCS had a couple copies of it, so I grabbed them once they started to trend up.

I just keep an eye on the sold listings and tailor searches because there really isn’t a hot character or movie spec pressure that causes these to increase in price. It’s pretty much supply and demand, but the supply and demand are hard to gauge to get in on the front end like you can with floppies.

Keep an eye out for Idw Transformers, older TMNT trades, obscure titles that weren’t big sellers but people are looking to read the whole run, odd titles that you don’t see in comic or trade form very much. The easiest thing to do is open the ebay or amazon app and use the barcode scanner to check prices. Every show I go to I always check the trade boxes especially when they have $5 trades, thats where you can do the most damage.

I sell a lot of IDW titles. Especially variants.
