It was mention by a few but other books/news jumped the gun. These will heat up when the new stories develop in Nov/Dec if the previews are correct.
Plus the print run for number 3 is only 30,000 for all covers.
Yup. This is the best long term spec of the series by far.
IMO, dont invest too heavily on Shang-Chi and related characters. Dont get me wrong Shang-Chi is a great character and aside from the tropes, the previous series (80’s) was great, and a good fit for him in the secret agent world. The movies and newer comics should involve him in more contemporary settings, rather than the sci-fi, super-powered Avengers type stuff.
Introducing ‘new’ characters is great IF they are involved in a good story and things get fleshed out. But there is a glut of new characters, that from a spec point see a bump when initially released, IF NOT caught on early enough. Otherwise, these characters fade into oblivion, with maybe another bump, IF someone does something with them.
I think ‘Bill’ mentioned mashups on another post; introducing new characters is another ploy from the ‘no new ideas’ comic writers/publishers.
My point - TREAD LIGHTLY - very few characters are going to reach Miles or maybe Spider-Gwen levels. Pay attention to cool costumes, cool covers, cool names, good storylines, current pricing and sale prices. No guarantees but it improves your odds - and I am still feeling my way around this too !
I had great hopes for Ghost-Spider (ticked off a lot of my boxes) but no luck yet; luckily I wasnt heavily invested.
It’s important to give these things the time they need to turn in to something. A year, two, five, perhaps more.
I completely agree with you that a lot of new characters will never see the light of day again, but in regard to Shang Chi, Disney has already signaled that they’re going to use a new-character universe for his stuff.
His old stuff is considered racist by some and is what is driving Disney to recreate. Combine that with Disney’s desire to expand their presence in the Chinese market and you have a foundation for some good modern spec.
I understand what you are saying, but when Wolverine comes in and is specifically looking for you, and you are related to Shang-Chi, to me the combo felt pretty solid. Not to mention girl/asian, and looked like she had pretty cool abilities. I was just surprised that it didn’t get any heat, especially with the amount of crap DC books I’ve flipped in the past where I didn’t even know why the book heated up. I believe over time it will, but for such and under ordered comic series, I feel like it should have been a little faster.
Holding!
I agree with ‘racist’ tropes in Shang-Chi’s 80’s series ! Just saying that placing him in a more contemporary setting - modern or old - as far as comics/movies suit his character better. I am open to the possibility that a more imaginative writer could prove me wrong. My point is that a rich story and new characters with longevity is what will make the spec more of a sure thing. The movies, assuming they do well, have a life span.
I was initially skeptical of Miles, but I think he has fleshed out with a good backstory, and supporting cast, and moderately good stories, without any movie. Speaks to his acceptance with both the comic/non comic readers. I am still on the fence with Spider-gwen, even though Marvel is trying to flesh out her back-story.
IMO, Shang-chi had a good backstory, which has been abandoned, for a new revision. I’m OK with that - but dont feel that it fits in with super-powered, space type stuff. Again, I could be proved wrong !
But all I’m saying is tread lightly with spec ! Also, it depends if you’re OK with light spec ($) vs. great spec ($$$).
I am still a fan of Shang-chi though !
Wolverine with every other Marvel character is also a dead horse, like the mashups, time travel, evil counter-parts, children of, and ‘new’ characters. IMO, I dont see it as a match; in favor of Wolverine. I’ll bet we see Deadpool, Ghost Rider, Miles, Punisher, etc paired with him somewhere down the line.
I have a copy ! But my point is depending on your spec, tread lightly ! or maybe I should say tread carefully ! Thats my point.
Generally speaking, I don’t concern myself with light spec versus great spec. I also don’t really concern myself with cameo versus first full and which will be more desired. In my mind, they’ll both be worthy investments to make as the buy in is only $2.40.
I take a fairly selective shotgun approach to this. At a $2.40 buy in I only have to be correct about 10% of the time to breakeven without a Miles or Gwen scenario. And if I get lucky, and some of my spec turns into a Gwen situation, I only have to be correct about 2 1/2% of the time.
Diversification is very important.
Is that considered low for a title from the Big 2?
30,000 from Marvel is low imo.
You must have alot of money to blow with how you turn every new character into a “must-buy” book… …
I switched to Geico and save 15% myself nowadays…
That’s a loaded statement. Which new characters have I said are a “must buy?”
Haha, this seems a lot like the type of comment I get lit up for. Is this all you’re here for? It’s getting tired…
I got the same sense when you stated it as:
Maybe implies you’re buying any and all the way that’s worded… you didn’t say “new characters” but you did mention “light spec” vs “great spec”… can you elaborate how one knows when it’s light spec vs great spec? Sometimes I think “great spec” isn’t known for most until it’s too late. I think at times it’s just pure “luck” if one happens to be sitting on a large stack of the same book that really takes off.
You omitted the statement that qualified what I was saying
I guess my definitions as to something that could appreciate and be worth $ (light spec), or something that could appreciate for $$$$ (great spec). Use as you see fit
IMO White fox, new Shang-Chi would be $, Miles would be $$$$
