No big deal, I’m not pumping it; I also didnt preorder any myself. Just saying based on what I’ve read here - the initial heat was on Thor 20, and then there was talk of Thor 21 being the ‘one’. At the time, TFAW still had it on their site for preorder. I didnt take the chance, thats on me ! I am not sold on Cates.
Not that I need to mention it, but if you didnt preorder it, you are going to have to depend on your LCS (like me !). I braved the cold for my one copy of Thor 20, probably will do the same for Thor 21 (next month).
@DocCRR Hope you know I wasn’t implying that at all. Anymore, I feel like just about everything is “scarce” around here (if I didn’t preorder online) as it seems like everything is damaged, shorted, or (I would hope not the case) held back behind the counter. I suppose that scarcity I see results in predisposed judgements about the state of affairs everywhere.
My preorders have become so unreliable and I never really had issues in the past (few exceptions of course).
My old LCS holds hot books for Whatnot. Would be fun to see a book on there after they tell you it’s sold out. I moved on from them, but I’m still a little salty.
Not at all, didnt feel that. I just wanted folks on the forum to realize that I wasnt trying to pump anything. More of a collector myself, and tight on my budget. Most of the info I get on books is from this forum. I know I read about Thor 20, 21 here, and had an opportunity to preorder Thor 21 (but didnt ).
I used to buy my books mostly from the LCS, and then switched to online because of the discounts and ease (and also because of the LCS attitude). But I’m like you, lately preorders have also become unreliable (and part of it is my fault for not jumping on ‘hot’ books). So, then I chance the LCS. Its what it is, I dont lose any sleep over a missing book.
Good luck !
I bet 21 and 20 become a battle ground as neither one was heavily spec’d before FOC.
People won’t be able to decide which is the book to have, undercutting the future spec value of both.
Always better to have one book be “the one” unless you like flipping a lot of books for small profits…
Yeah, I have the same problem with LCS’s around me. I used to shop with them for years, and then they suddenly cop attitudes because I am not a big volume buyer. The issue of not liking speculators or guessing at who is a speculator, especially irks me, because the same LCS speculates (books marked up, check prices on Ebay, push store variants, no greetings, etc.). But they can do what they want, just as I have my choices. Just try my luck at the LCS, when I have to, with no expectations on books or customer service.
I guess for me, not being a volume speculator, the issue is will any of these books hold value in the long run and, is it worth my time and $$$ (if I have to shell out more) for the book. I am turned off the FOMO, and been burned enough of times, that if I miss out on a book, I just wait till it drops in price.
I didnt preorder Thor 21 but if I dont find one, I’m OK - I’ll probably find one down the road. The Miss Minutes cover was one I wish I could have/should have ordered pre-FOC, but you win some you lose some. I just cant see myself paying the Ebay price right now, and I think it will come down in price after a few months.
Still curious about the second prints. The reg. second print is listed on TFAW (Alana mentioned this !)
I think all the first appearances have people holding back. I know I am.
If the cover for the Thor 20 second print is the last page from Thor 20 (first print), then it might be worth something. (Sorry not spoiling). Of course, it matters if Cates does something meaningful with the character.
But yeah, too many first appearances, all the time …
Thor #5 first print goes for more than the 2nd and 3rd print. With the third print being the cover that checks all the boxes. But it was heavily ordered so one day maybe the third print will eclipse the 1st.
The worker at one LCS I go to told me the shop owner pulled all his copies of Thor 20 off the floor. Told customers he didn’t have any. The employee whom I’m friends with told me he has a giant stack of them.
Apparently what happened was he got FLOODED with a ton of phone calls on the week of Thor 20. So he did what he always does, checks ebay and told the customers on the phone he didn’t have them.
I never understand why people call a store asking for hot books on the week that they’re suppose to come out. Chances are the shop owner is just going to lie to you and pull the books off the shelf. I know that these callers all called the shops around my area as Thor 20 was a ghost on release day. Thankfully I was able to find one at a game shop where I know the speculators don’t go to and secure myself a copy.
STOP CALLING YOUR SHOP ASKING FOR HOT BOOKS WHEN IT HITS KEY COLLECTOR!
I was like that initially; I guess its par for the course when you are a newbie, and dont know how to get to the ‘hot’ books. I’m getting better by looking at this forum, reading the chatter, etc. but I’ve learnt that its better to not sweat if things dont work out.
What bothers me more is that your shop owner pulled the books on release day, when he could have limited them to 1 per for the day or week. Could have realized some new, happy customers, but I see this with many LCS I deal with, where I feel there is an attitude problem. Doesnt keep me a loyal or happy customer.
BTW, Search: 10 results found for “thor” – Dark Dominion Comics has some listings for Thor 20.
This shop owner is one weird dude man. He never wants to sell anything, and is truly the ABSOLUTE LAZIEST person I have ever met in my life. He gets his employee to do everything and is always in front of the computer at the store wanking himself.
Very nice, that’s how a store should be ran. Limit to a copy per person. Kudos to Dark Dominion. I always feel that the objective of a business is to actually sell stuff and/or keep customers happy. My LCS does the opposite, he hordes stuff and never sells it. Tells customers he never has any hot books even if they pre-ordered. He does his best to lose customers.
I did a lot of crazy things when I was a newbie (still do some of them), but I find it very hard for LCS to not realize that their busiest days are going to be the day before or on new comic book day - for listing/putting out new books, calls/questions/requests/and sales. Its just the reality - nothing to get upset about or take advantage of; in fact something to be thankful for and an opportunity to entice new customers.
I’ve seen some shopowners just change in attitude over the years and not for the better, so I feel you …Hopefully he treats his employee well at least !
This. And not just for comics. If you hear about a possible hot deal, scarce inventory refresh, price mistake, never call. You’re just burning the deal for yourself and others.
Took me a while to figure this out when I was a newbie; didnt realize I was alerting the LCS to pull the book. To be fair, there were and still are some LCS that are very patient. Live and learn !
I wandered in today to my LCS and grabbed the last Land cover off the shelf. I found an A and a Land cover over the weekend too. Which is to say, I’m surprised there were copies left since my shop has patrons who always seem to be all over this stuff. Lucky me.
