Overstreet is only good for reference. It’s archaic and outdated. Prices are too fluid now.
Ever notice how the highest grades are NM- in the price guide? Probably because with it’s over the top strict grading you’d rarely find a comic in NM, much less NM+ or NM/M.
How is a very specific set of grading definitions archaic? It’s the industry standard for most collectors myself included. I don’t buy into CGC’s very vague definitions.
I don’t use it for the values because as you said prices are changing all the time. However I almost always refer to the grading definitions when grading books for sale.
I also think that these books designated as 10’s truly can’t exist. There’s always gong to be some flaw with any book. You just have to really look at it.
Those Marvel lenticular covers are practically bulletproof so those shouldn’t have any problem achieving 9.9, 10.0. If people didn’t make such a stink about them we would have more lenticulars coming out and less damaged books on shipping.
I don’t think the point is to go to the microscopic level just to prove an atom is out of place.
If you can’t detect a visual flaw using a loupe, it might as well be a 10.0 as most people don’t really care beyond that. You’re splitting hairs if you try harder than magnifying glasses.
If you use Overstreet, your going to grade yourself out of its true value relative to other books. You’ll convince yourself it’s 9.0 or lower when cgc or cbcs would grade it 9.4. Which is fine, as grading is subjective, but listing books as below what cgc or cbcs would likely grade them is just leaving money on the table if you go to sell.
That’s fine if you’re ok with that. I prefer to be as consistent with the third party graders as I can reasonably be…however I normally list a book slightly under what I think it will grade as, then add “or better” if i think it has a legit chance at grading higher.
Damn you CGC I knew you would get me eventually for talking all the smack… I’ve heard of newton rings before but these are newton streaks like 5 of them, one is 7 inches long. My book has more oil in its case than a pasta primavera. Do they fix for free or should I go elsewhere? This is the worst graded comic experience I’ve had personally with any of the 3 graders, I have 500 graded books.
You know it’s a visual effect of the inner plastic that encases the comic touching the outer plastic case, right?
What I have done is take a couple light suction cups, attach one to each side of the case (back and front) and pull them apart ever so slightly. The rings will disappear when the two plastics are separated.
However when you release the suction the rings may return…sometimes in different places too. Sometimes you need to try a few attempts to get them so they are “tolerable”.
As for cgc fixing it…they’ve never acknowledged the problem…sorry you got rings. The comic is in no danger. But that’s why I prefer my PC comics in CBCS slabs…
Well if you want a half a gallon of crisco oil in with your comic and holder or the illusion of half a gallon of crisco oil in cased with your comic CGC is the way to go. I PGX and CBCS and I’ll make my own magazine holder and start grading those myself to not give CGC any business whatsoever.
So I have an X-men 94 that I was thinking of getting graded, but based on this conversation, I have decided to skip the grading and slabbing. Has anyone just had a book cleaned and pressed, and if so, any particular tips for that?
Matters what reason you grade for, some books I feel need to be preserved of they will be dust in another decade, others are for sale, some are for display all that factors in to where and if to grade for me.
I think there are other preservation methods, other than slabbing, that should keep the book in tact. I do not plan on selling it, but a mylar in a top-loader should protect it just fine. Have you only had books cleaned or pressed before without slabbing?
I’ve never just had a cleaning and press always graders after that, Sorry I cant help you there, a couple people here have master pressers they use maybe they can put you in contact with.
