Blind Bags

Ugh…dynamite blind bags? Basically the same number of variants they put out for every book…now you just don’t know which one it will be…

Hard ass pass.

This blind bag thing is going to end quick…

I’m not sure it will. The foil train is still chugging along despite not being novel anymore. Blind bags get the gamblers. I think publishers will keep doing them.

Blind bags will last longer than those lenticular motion covers but shorter than other gimmicks maybe.

Humanity’s propensity for gambling is very very powerful.

Wanna bet on it??? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Oddly, I think the blind bag thing will hinge a lot on Mark Spears’ offering. I have almost no issue with the way he has rolled it out so far. Personally way too many covers and versions of covers but that is minor. For me, he has hit all the characteristics of the proper way to do it, close to normal cover price, different covers than open order, rare versions, and most importantly, 1 of 1 to chase. He is also enough on the socials that it should be obvious if, and when, the 13 unholy grails are found. He has set up a pretty good chance of chase so that blind bags may be worth more unopened, especially if a countdown of the 13 books starts. The longer it goes without the 13 redemption tickets found, the more the unopened ones will be worth.

To me this sets up the perfect blind bag environment. If this blind bag gets as crazy as I’m thinking it might, you will see plenty more of them. If it is tepid or mediocre response to it, I assume it will dwindle off slowly.

As much as CovrPrice seems to believe the DC one is a success I’m not so sure. Both of the LCS near me have tonnes of copies left. Maybe because they were both caught by surprise by the Battle Beast one, somehow, and over ordered this one, or maybe it is not nearly as popular.

Even gamblers stick to games with better odds… if all I can get realistically from a blind bag is a comic that would have easily been an open order book, people will shy away. I bought 5 Batman blind bags and got 3 Jim Lee and 2 Tedesco. I knew most of the Batman bags would be crap which is why I only got 5.

Mark is doing it right compared to the others which is why I bought a ton of them.

For me:

  1. It has to be a reasonable price. Getting the Mark Spears M&tW at around $4.25 ea was great.
  2. It has to be interesting. Spears is doing it right with so many covers, but we’ll authentically know after release.
  3. It HAS to be something I am personally interested in. If I’m stuck with 'em, I want the cover art to be worth it (it can only have one story since it’s only one issue)

I don’t care one bit about foil versions of covers. That is not appealing to me. The blind bags need to have cover options I can’t get elsewhere, and not just a 1:500. Spears is doing that well. 80+ covers is absurd, but I can’t say I dislike it. You’re going to get a few weird, different covers with Spears.

Yeah, I felt the Batman bags were both lazy with reused art and expensive. However, I visited a half dozen stores last week and all were long gone (regular copies at 5/6 stores were close to sold out, too, even one store that orders extremely heavily). I think Spears is doing too many covers but he’s keeping the price much more appropriate and I think his project will keep the blind bag enthusiasm going. Marvel’s got that Ultimate Endgame bag coming, too.

The blind bag concept for sports cards has transformed that industry. I think the same will happen with comics. I don’t see this going away.

Im thinking of putting $5 in the one-armed bandit; and if i hit ill purchase whatever ratio cover i want

You have to wonder if people don’t know what they’re buying. They obviously didn’t pre-order…so did they do any research since FOC? Or did they watch some YouTuber hype it up and then ran to the store and bought a stack?

Are they under the impression there is actually something in the bag warranting the price?

I know there was an error book….wonder if someone came in and wiped them out…
