tynion spec doesn’t die, it just hibernates
Young Avengers #1 - Raw 9.2 copies now selling for about $30 USD on ebay, way down from the peak.
Oh Kamala Khan, your first appearances won’t pay for my early retirement. Ditto Amadeus Cho lol.
Long term Kamala is still good spec
And my beautiful 1st Riri 9.8 sits for the cost of a Starbucks ![]()
What a joke these characters became.
I would like to offer up two special titles:
Peter Panzerfaust and Rat Queens
Peter Panzerfaust was a juggernaut with 9.8 #1’s hitting over $300 at one time. It was hot, optioned, and now dead.
Rat Queens similar story.
But the king of Dead Spec:
Thief of Thieves
I’m more of a buy what I would like to read or looks interesting comic buyer and stay off the spec train for the most part but thanks to this site do try to keep up with what’s hot etc. Crazy to see how low the prices have dropped on some of the books listed so far yet Mark Spears and his 8395 covers command premiums
Shame about Aftershock and Scout books too, I have WAY too many of their books and the quality on most was definitely there.
I’ll see your Peter Panzerfaust #1 and raise you a Sixth Gun #1.
Coming on the heels of the success of Walking Dead’s first season and the skyrocketing prices of its first issue. Sixth Gun #1 in CGC 9.8 almost hit $1K in 2013.
Once NBC passed on the pilot, the prices tanked so fast. The silver lining is that we may have never gotten Pedro Pascal in GoT, Narcos, and Mandalorian if that series gets green lit.
It’s quite amazing how story telling, casting and show quality has affected Marvel/Disney with so many promising stories ended up being so freaking bad and absolutely tanking the comics - even if the story/art of the comics is well done.
Marvel spec, unfortunately, has primarily become movie/TV show spec which is very unfortunate.
My two personal favorites - Aphra and Miles Morales - seem to merely be waiting for a live action announcement before becoming hot again in the comic world. Such a shame because both characters are AWESOME!
As for Mark Spears - let’s get this correct now - early Monsters releases still sell for a premium. The flip side is that he released WAY too much this year and over saturated the market on other titles.
- Halloween blind bags - brilliant idea
- Halloween blind bag shipping debacle - TERRIBLE!
- Christmas blind bags - Really dumb idea except for his wallet. No other way to spin this
- Kickstarter - brilliant idea
- Kickstarter shipping delays - Absolutely SUCKED! The quality of what I received as, what I have to believe, one of the last to receive their comics was adequate at best. It was a game of, whoever received their Kickstarter comics first, wins.
And this is from a Mark Spears (Monsters) fan.
I wrote on this back in 2013. Leading up to the announcement that it was canceled. Everything was hot. As soon as it was canceled, things cooled off on sales really bad. People were saying the bubble burst. It still hasn’t. The Sixth Gun bubble certainly burst. I was happy because I got a Sixth Gun #1 for a buck not long ago. I sold all my copies back in the day.
Also, I see your sixth gun and raise you a “Rachel Rising” with 2nd and 3rd print 9.8’s selling for a grand.
How about Lumberjanes & Lumberjanes Gotham Academy
Y The Last Man was a real downer for me. Loved the books then it was turned into a tv show that was never advertised, cancelled after a few episodes and poof.
I really liked that first season of Y Last Man. Great book and story too… BKV at his best I think.
Always enjoyed the Hack/Slash books and surprised it hasn’t been adapted yet, seems tailor made for it.
Some Hack/Slash issues still have a bit of spec heat. Mainly thanks for being saucy on occasion!
How about Punchline? Have to admit I stopped reading after a while, did they kill her off or just stop using her?
They need to introduce Absolute Grail as Wonder Woman’s arch enemy! I loved this character and the story. Stupid DC - unless they do this. But they won’t. There’s always a chance
I’m glad I offloaded those during peak selling times…
