Dirty D's F.O.C

Yeah. Absolute Batman, Ultimate Spider-Man, now this book…no matter how much these are advertised at FOC,
The general population seems to be caught off guard. This was never a spoiler cover…as it was know pre-FOC.

But first cover + 1st in cameo wins above all 99% of the time.

So he has two names, right? Winter Soldier AND Ultimate Wolverine?

Sort of like Spider-Gwen and Ghost Spider….

Three because the call him Logan too. Four if you include his name as “specimen”

but hes also on connecting cover

Demand for the solo spoiler cover will far exceed the allure of a smaller print run connecting cover. It’s a good consolation chase though.

Hello CHU Nation. The Christmas Holiday is right around the corner, and before we know it it’ll be 2025. And what that means is this is likely the last “full” FOC weekend of 2024. And it’s a pretty light week as it is. But there are a few books that may be worth an FOC flyer in case your shop doesn’t stock up on them. Mainly reprints/facsimiles and some covers. So let’s take a look!

COVERS

IMG_4691

Spirits of Vengeance #6

This cover pops, and is a little freaky…hot babe (Witch (eh) Woman) kissing a skull with melting flesh. Gist’s cover B is also pretty good. Dirty D cover of the week!

IMG_4689

GI Joe #3 (Cover C - Pablo Villalobos Variant)
Close runner up. I love a good Baroness cover.

IMG_4688

Deadly Tales of the Gunslinger Spawn #2 (Cover B - Mark Spears Variant)
Hard to pass up a Mark Spears cover for $2.99.

IMG_4692

Star Wars Legacy of Vader #1 (Jedi Knights Sneak Preview Variant)

Star Wars spec ain’t what it used to be…but here’s one to keep an eye on…”Sneak Preview” cover of what looks to be a precursor to the imperial guard, maybe? Jedi Knights is an upcoming comic series that takes place before the Phantom Menace, debuting in March 2025.

REPRINTS

IMG_4693

Amazing Spider-Man #129 (Facsimile Ed Foil Variant)

Not the first time this has received the fax treatment, but it is first in foil…

IMG_4694

Fantastic Four #2 (Facsimile Ed Foil Variant)

FF 2, first skrulls, get the fax and foil treatment. Although after the secret invasion Disney plus series not sure how many are still excited by skrulls.

IMG_4695

Limited Collectors Edition #48 (Facsimile Edition - Foil Variant)
Reprinting the reprint of the Superman and Flaah races from Superman 199 / Flash 175. This is the larger than life, bigger than a magazine original size. Comes in the foil variant. I don’t know where to put these, to be honest, but they look great!

IMG_4696

Ultimate Universe One Year in #1 (2nd Printing)

Somehow even with all the hype the spoiler variant of this book caught some off guard. Well here is the 2nd print, and looks like it will be the same cover (maybe the “U” is a different color).

READS

IMG_4698

Eddie Brock Carnage #1
Not sure if Eddie has bonded/Shared with carnage before…officially or unofficially…not sure how much it matters either…it was bound to happen. Worth keeping an eye on.

PICK OF THE WEEK

IMG_4697

Robot Tod
Follow the adventures of the titular hero Tod, who is trying to regain memories and avoid capture by malicious wizards. This first issue introduces his companions: The kindly and shy Sept, her vitriolic and selectively invisible alter ego Ember, the inventive mouse person Furn Fells, and Gwyelder the enigmatic fox guide. This new and lushly watercolored, ongoing series is set in the same post-apocalyptic, psychedelic, magical world of The Wrenchies and It Will All Hurt .
I don’t know…it sounds like it could be a fun! No variants or incentives I’m aware of. Why not give it a shot? From what I can tell it’s been an online comic and this is the first this character will be in print…

That’s it for this week, and probably this year CHU’s. It’s been a wild one of great reads and surprising spec hits. Hopefully the fun continues to roll into 2025. Peace out!

I think at one time as a kid I had both of those Superman/Flash race issues and remember them fondly. I’ll be picking up the reprint for the PC

Happy New Year, CHU! It’s been nearly a month since I put together one of these FOC articles. There just hasn’t been all that much stuff to talk about. But that changes this week.

2024 was a great year for covers, first appearances and most importantly stories. Let’s hope 2025 continues that trend.

Deja Vu All Over Again

IMG_5095

Detective Comics #31 (Facsimile Edition (Bob Kane Foil Variant))

DC has been pumping out facsimiles as of late…but it’s been a while since we got a classic early Golden Age cover by Bob Kane. And I believe this is in the original golden age size! Hopefully we get a Batman 223 soon to pair with this one. Or Batman #3 or #9. He’ll, why not Action Comics #7. More Golden Age!!!

I’ll be grabbing both a copy of the regular cover to read, and foil cover for fun.

IMG_5096

Daredevil #1 (Facsimile Foil Variant)
Not as exciting as Detective 31, but still a big key. I either have first printings of these Marvel facsimiles, or have True Believer copies. So I’m just grabbing the foils…until Marvel takes a hint from DC and prints them in their original silver age size…

IMG_5097

It’s Jeff #1 (4th Printing)

The Marvel Rivals game made Jeff the Land Shark a household name. And as such this book’s first 3 printings got hot. Marvel is not one to miss a money grab given the opportunity. So here it is, a 4th printing.

IMG_5098

It’s Jeff the Jeff-Verse #1 (2nd Printing)

This second one shot also got hot. So it’s getting a new printing as well. I just want to know with all these Jeff reprints, why we’re not getting a West Coast Avengers #7 reprint (or more likely a facsimile…)?

Covers

Nothing that really blows one away with cover art this week…however here are some notable ones.

IMG_5099

Batgirl #4 (Cover B - Sozomaika)

Just a nice Sozomaika cover. Been a while since we’ve talked about her.

IMG_5100

Deadpool #11 (Brooks Animated-Style Variant)

If Deadpool was a Saturday morning cartoon, this is totally what it would look like! So well done. Something about this cover I just have to have it. Might be just another fun cover of many fun Deadpool covers…but it could also be a sleeper.

IMG_5101

Shazam #20 (Cover C - Mark Spears Variant)
It wouldn’t be an FOC article these days if we didn’t have a Spears cover highlighted.

IMG_5103

Amazing Spider-Man #67 (Skottie Young Variant)
So…I guess this issue spidey is eaten by a frog…actually a Venomized PAC-Man frog. Dare I say…. “Vrog”…?

New Ones

IMG_5102

Marvel Mutts #1
Join the Marvel Mutts in their very first comic book adventure! Collecting issues #1-12 of the Friday Funnies series, these heartwarming tales - and wagging tails - are sure to elicit a round of a-paws. Featuring Lockjaw, Lucky, Cosmo, Bats and Ms. Marvel’s dearest doggie, Mittens.
Hey, only a matter of time until all these Marvel Pets get skins in Rivals, and team up! Then this book gets hot.

IMG_5105

Red Hulk #1
THUNDERBOLT ROSS - in a cell deep below the ground - is a prisoner of DOCTOR DOOM And he is not alone. Brilliant military, criminal and political minds have been gathered against their will in a prison complex that serves as a “THINK TANK” to help carry out Doom’s plan for global domination. But the RED HULK has other plans!
Tie in to a certain book at the end of this article…

There’s also a Marvel Studios Variant whose cover art has not been released…wondering if it is a photo variant being withheld until the next Thunderbolts trailer is released…

First Appearances

IMG_5108

New Champions #2
Who is the mysterious MAGNETRIX?
We all know who she is. This may be a first appearance, but not a first cover. I would stick with cover A as she’s more prominent than the other variants.

DIRTY D PICK-OF-THE-WEEK

IMG_5110

One World Under Doom #1 (of 9)
Six months ago, Doctor Victor Von Doom became Sorcerer Supreme - then disappeared behind Latveria’s closed borders. The world has woken up to a new reality: Doctor Doom, Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme, has magically taken over every broadcast medium on the planet and declared himself Emperor of the World - the ruler of a new United Latveria! And shockingly, impossibly, all of Earth’s leaders seem to be going along with this. Earth’s heroes quickly form a strike team to stop Doom’s machinations. But will they succeed? And what happens when some begin to welcome their new Emperor with open arms, clamoring for One World Under Doom?
2025 is going to be a big year for Doom. First Robert Downey Jr. is revealed to be playing Doom at SDCC. Then this story arc was announced at NYCC. So it begins…

Probably not a spec book, but POTW for the read…and who doesn’t like cool Doom covers…?

That’s it for this week, my friends. Happy hunting and reading this week!

I want Batman 227 to get FACSIMILE treatment…

It’s golden age sized too which I like.

Hello CHU. Pretty decent size week this FOC. I think this whole Diamond bankruptcy and Image moving to Lunar is messing up a few shops. Also TFAW seems to have closed their FOC window early this week. So sorry about not having some links to books. Anyway, let’s see whats inters this week.

COVERS

IMG_5314

Star Wars Ahsoka #8 (Takashi Okazaki Variant)

You may remember Okazaki’s work on Star Wars Visions comic and cartoon series. Episode 1 of the cartoon introduced a character named Ronin, a wandering Jedi/Samurai who also appeared in his Visions comics.

Anyway, Ahsoka probably resembles a samurai as much as any Jedi. So having Okazaki draw a cover of her is a natural fit. For that reason this is Dirty D’s Cover-of-the-Week!!

IMG_5219

Green Lantern Corps #1 (Szerdy Variant)
Another sexy cover by Szerdy.

NOTABLE REPRINTS

IMG_5316

Absolute Batman #1 (5th Printing)
Think this will be our last printing of this book? I’m not so sure.

IMG_5317

Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 (Facsimile Edition (Super Powers Variant))
Some may be getting bored of all the facsimiles coming out of not-so-hard-to-find or common keys, or even foil variants of classics (I don’t count myself as one of those). But here is one that has an open order variant that’s interesting. This issue is the first appearance of John Constantine. But he’s not featured on the cover of the original book. So this variant “fixes” that with an action figure variant of old Hell Blazer himself!

I think that’s pretty cool. Something different, anyway.

NEW ONES

IMG_5318

Doom Academy #1 (of 5)
The Strange Academy is back for a second year, but Doom is taking over the world, and moving this school from New Orleans (“Nah Lins”) to Latveria. What could go wrong?

IMG_5320

Star Wars High Republic Fear of Jedi #1

It’s the final arc of Star Wars: The High Republic.

As fighting within the Nihil Occlusion Zone intensifies, Jedi Master Keeve Trennis is set upon a path that will change her life forever. Guest-starring The Acolyte’s Wookiee Jedi Master Kelnacca alongside fan-favorite characters from Star Wars: The High Republic novels, audio dramas and comics.
Also, the Black History Month variant(shown) features the first cover of the twins from the Acolyte Disney+ series we’ve all already forgotten about.

IMG_5321

The Hive #1
Mason Shaw is no one. A worker bee. All that changes when he crosses paths with a few stragglers trying to stay one step ahead of a queen with immense powers who is determined to control her hive no matter who she has to kill. Welcome to THE HIVE .
New book from image. Keeps it just simple enough to peak my interest…

FIRST APPEARANCES

IMG_5319

Transformers #17
This issues solicitation promises the debut of an “all new character.” Note that I did not say all new “transformer.”

If the character is cool, I’m sure it’ll get a nice 2nd print cover by Jason Howard :crossed_fingers:

IMG_5324

Star Wars Jedi Knights #1
New series set in the prequel era, focusing on the guardians of peace and justice in the galaxy. Featuring QUI-GON JINN, OBI-WAN KENOBI, YODA and MACE WINDU alongside BRAND-NEW JEDI, as well as a mysterious new villain targeting Qui-Gon Jinn.

INDY SPOTLIGHT

IMG_5322

Bug Wars #1 (of 6)
Slade Slaymaker is a kid from Alabama suddenly lost in a vicious world beyond his imagining, a world of marauding ant armies, spellcasting spider witches, and beetle-riding barbarians. A kingdom of tiny but deadly warriors hidden in his own backyard. The same world that saw his father eaten alive by insects now plunges young Slade into the middle of a brutal Bug War to decide the fate of his family.
What grabbed my attention was that Jason Aaron is writing this, and this arc is “Book One”, the first adventure in a new dark fantasy epic. So could get a cult following, similar to Canto.

PICK-of-the-WEEK

IMG_5217

Geiger #10 (2nd Print)
Now this might be a first. The Pick-of-the-Week going to a reprint…and an independent publisher book that’s not a #1 issue?? Have I lost my mind? Well, I’ll let you decide after hearing me out.

Issue #10 introduced the Glowing Woman, Ashley “Ash” Arden. She purported has a cure for the same radioactive condition ravaging Geiger’s body. The introduction of this character is going to have a profound effect on Geiger’s post-nuclear-war world going forward, according to Geoff Johns.

Recall the introduction of Junkyard Joe back in issue 6 of the mini-series. That book also got a reprint with Joe on the cover…and snuck under the radar and sells for a good penny now.

With Image switching over to Lunar along with Diamonds bankruptcy…this feels like it may happen again here. I’ve looked and it’s hard to find an online retailer offering this book (MCS is current). We’ll see what happens. It also wouldn’t surprise me if this character eventually gets her own mini-series and/or has a role in the Geiger TV series that’s in development by Paramount Televisions Studios(remember that?).

But for all those reasons that makes this the Dirty D Pick-of-the-Week!

I’m in for a few. And I grabbed a first print the day it came out as well…so keep an eye out for that book as well going forward.

That’s all for now folks. See you next week!!

I can’t find Geiger 10 2nd print anywhere. I must be doing something wrong on MCS because I can’t find an active link to add it to my cart.

It was on mcs on saturday when i added it to my order. They may end foc on Sunday night. If you look in December preview and search on ‘geiger’ it should appear.

alot of places cut foc early due to mlk holiday

how dare they!

It was there last night as of about Midnight EST. They may remove items on FOC at 1am est (12 central).

You go to the January previews and search Geiger and it popped up.

I ordered my copies from State of Comics though. They don’t have it listed anymore.

Those were the only places I found it last night.

DIRTY PICKS FOR 1/26/25 FOC

Not much exciting this FOC week. And with football games on just going to put out some quick highlights.

Covers

IMG_5467

Rogue the Savage Land #2 (of 5) (J Scott Campbell Variant)

I feel like the point of this series is to pump out sexy Rogue covers.

IMG_5465

Rogue the Savage Land #1 (2nd Printing)

As I was saying…

IMG_5468

Mark Spears Monsters #1 (4th Printing)
No one should be surprised this is going to a 4th printing. Beware, there is a 1:20 incentive (different art)

New Series

IMG_5469

Herculoids #1
Hidden in the furthest reaches of space, the planet of Amzot is legendary for its fabled riches - and for the terrible fates that befall anybody who seeks to exploit them. Those who survive their encounters tell blood-chilling tales of horrific, imposing monsters that guard the mysterious world - yet the lure of its abundant resources is too great to resist. Raiders and pirates continue to come from across the galaxy, and there is only one force strong enough to stop their constant attacks - The Herculoids
Hanna-Barbera classic cartoon is back. Not the first comic book go around, though. Unfortunately none of Dynamite’s 1000 variant covers are that exciting. Would prefer one have more of a style like the original cartoon. Waiting for a 2nd print personally.

IMG_5470

Zatanna #1 (of 6) (Sozomaika Variant)
New limited series. Zatanna has her fans, I’m not one of the, but I like the Sozomaika variant. Comes in foil too!

That’s it…light on the wallets, at least.

What’s everyone else eyeballing this FOC?
