eBay Headaches

This guy turned into a real negative Nelly when I explained to him and declined his offer (ps he started his offers out really low) then he wanted to scold me on how many comics he buys and how I am missing out on “big repeat sales”. For the record he has one purchase this month and 6 over the last year

I am curious how you guys sell things and what you see. I list almost all my items as buy it now with the best offer available unless I really don’t know the market for something and then I will put it on auction. Some people will submit offers, but I get the impression a lot of people don’t. I will lower the prices a little every once in a while and a lot of times the sales will increase because of that, but the funny thing is if they submitted an offer I would have taken one lower than that because I am still well within my margins.

I don’t use the best offer option, but that still doesn’t stop people from sending low ball offers. I set the price reasonably within what something has sold for (usually at or just below) and also take into consideration what’s currently for sale for that item. If there is very little inventory available and the asking prices are well over what sold I may list slightly over last sold but lower than current asking prices.

I do the same, list as Buy it now with best offer. I price it competitively so even when I get an offer it’s in the 80-90% range but a lot of times I don’t even get an offer when it sells. I go into it with the mindset that people are looking for deals and I don’t need to get top dollar for everything. I price stuff to move and go to the next thing. Doesn’t stop the lowballers though hehe.

I am kind of the same but I do allow best offers. So normally I set my price at the going rate and then set my offer range in a comfortable setting 10-15% off. More times than not low ball offers come in (have a new baseball bat at $250 and a guy offered $175, I can break it and get the warranty replacement valued at $400 so no motivation to sell it that cheap) with comics a $20 comic will set the best offer at $18. People will still message me asking if I will take lower after they have shot a low ball offer that was auto-declined.

I’ve been wondering the same as you. I originally had everything set with Best Offer, but found that more than 50% of the time people wouldn’t even use it, just buy the item without even submitting an offer. About, 25% of the time it was severe low ball offers, and the rest were just people looking to take a few dollars off because the Best Offer was there. As an experiment, I’ve recently started eliminating the Best Offer on my listings to see if it makes a difference. Now I use let the Send Offers build up to 5 or more than send them out with 10 or 15 percent off and allow counteroffers. Also do a much more organized reduction of prices (or not) to keep postings moving along because I keep bumping up against the 250 limit of free listings. Not sure if it will work any better but going to give it a couple of months.

I thought they did away with the 250 free listings, I can sell a ton of books as long as I don’t cross $5 million a month or something stupid now

No best offers. Price to sell, or if i’m not motivated I list it at a “make me sell this to you” price.

Don’t like my price? Swipe left. Someone else will come along.

I find 50% of accepted best offers are dead beats. I ain’t got time for them.

What is everyone’s experience with PO Boxes? Twice now I’ve had sales that the person has asked me to send to a different address which turned out to be PO Boxes. I only send to the address on file at the time of the sale but was wondering if there is some reason to avoid sending to PO Boxes, does eBay not provide Seller Protection when sending to them?

The last sale was so suspect (asked me to send to a PO Box and had no feedback from last 12 months) that I just took the hit and sent it tracking and required a signature. So I went to look up the tracking and I see this:

Feeling like I dodged a bullet on this sale but a little upset that I paid for a signature but can’t even see it? A fee might apply to see the signature confirmation that I already paid for? Didn’t even know this was possible.

That is suspect. I don’t have a problem sending to PO boxes as long as that is the address on file. I’ve had lots of sales to buyers using boxes, a lot of times they live somewhere remote and in small towns so they have to go to their post office to pick up mail.

Always ship to the address on file, no exceptions.

PO Boxes are fine—if the on-file address. I never send to another address as all my seller protections with eBay disappear. I make eBay buyers cancel and rebuy if they want a different address.

Absolutely. If they have a problem with that cancel the order.

I just let them right way that I refuse any other address due to it not being allowed under Ebay rules and they can cancel the order if they want. More often than not they are up to no good. No reason to put yourself in a losing position.

:100: % agree with you there. Unless it’s a small order and you are willing to take the risk for a few bucks.

Have a baseball bat up on eBay we got for one weekend tournament. Guy asked if I would take x amount for it. I said sure and sent him the offer. He turns around and says never mind it is too expensive. I am like you made the offer man. People suck
