So this guy turned out to be a royal pain in my neck. The one I listed above. Reached out to me. Asked if it was 9.8. I said it is listed as NM. This to me is 9.2-9.6. In my estimation the book was a firm 9.6 and a 9.8 depending on CGC grader’s day. No color breaks. No rounded corners. But I don’t list numeric grades. Simply NM. This was an expensive book.
He received the book and said “this is not 9.8”. I responded I didn’t advertise the book as 9.8. I listed it as NM. He started a return right away said the book was not up to his collecting standards.
I took the return and had a -$215 balance as a result.
When that amount of money is involved, that is not only a punch in the gut for the return, but also a migraine for having to deal with it over the course of that time.
I used to put VF-NM in the listings title until I had the same thing happen to me that Anthony just described. Annoyed me enough to never mention a grade in a listing again lol; now everything gets a generic “May have minor shelf wear but otherwise in good condition, see all pictures” unless there’s noticeable flaws to list.
I don’t Play the game with these people. For me that question leads to an automatic block. Because even though you thought you were clear…they will still take a chance knowing eBay will protect them and they have no risk. All the risk is on the seller.
Speaking of which…When does the eBay switch to not allowing the seller to submit a request for return?
If someone messages me asking if it’s a 9.8 I automatically ignore. I will not respond and will block. Don’t need the headache, I seen these people at my LCS on ncbd going through every single copy with an electron microscope looking for the mintiest book as a line forms behind them waiting to pick up their copy.
Anytime someone asks me if something would get a 9.8 I’d tell them in my opinion no, the best they’ll probably get is a 9.4. After that they usually shove off.
Just read this from around post 750 to here and added quite a few ‘buyers’ to my block list. Getting ready to start selling comics again soon.
I appreciate all of you that have put information in here - you are appreciated!
My bitter story is that I sold a Luka Doncic Optic Purple autograph for about $4.5K quite awhile ago. Buyer gets the card and says something to the effect of (not exact wording): “I looked at this through a 10x loupe and see some light scratching. I’d like a partial refund of $1K.” Now, I’m not overly well to do and that was one of my best pulls ever. I hated to do it, but I went through with the partial refund. Still p*sses me off and more than likely, he still sent it in for grading (it was a beaut).
I hate the expectation of CGC 9.8 or PSA 10’s when sold raw. Third party grading has made money for people, but it has NOT made the hobbies better. In my opinion, it’s made people better at being a$$holes. I have quite a few Ohtani rookies and I see on my other forums that if people aren’t grading Ohtani’s, then something is wrong with the card. Wrong fool! I just don’t like to send cards or comics for grading. Rant over
I think I once replied with something like… . “If I’m grading it, it’s a perfect 10.0 because I only pick winner books, even with flaws!”
But yeah, my descriptions usually detail, this book is in NM type condition, I’m not a professional grader. Don’t think I ever heard back from that seller I sent that goofy response to.
I usually ignore as well though… especially when the price is under $50 and or my ROI is lower than $50 total…
