Overall, art is better today, IMO. Just my personal preference, as it is 100% subjective. But, I miss the days when covers told the story of the book. I love Rook Exodus A covers for that reason. The compositions of 70s and 80s covers were just so good.

It was betterā¦ I hate the whole āposingā for the photograph covers nowā¦ some are amazing artwork but I like the old school covers that depict whatās going on in the story way more than any āglamour shotā type of poseā¦

I think the overall quality of comics is higher today than in the 80s. The upper end was better then, but it was a steep drop off after that.
What I miss about comics from back then are the stand alone issues (or at most 2 to 3 books in a row).
I picked up a Power man comic yesterday as an example. Good story, followed the typical good guy wins against a villain, but it ended at that issue. Fun read & done.
Yes there are some books that do this now but itās far less common.

I miss when you could pick up a single issue off the rack for $1 and it was pretty much a self contained story. Sure there was an ongoing arc of sort in the backgroundā¦but you didnāt have to worry about missing an issue, or remembering what happened a month or two ago to enjoy the one issue. That one issue was packed with story and the quality of the art was t all that important to meā¦granted some artists I liked more than othersā¦but the story is what captured me.
99% of the reason I donāt pick up any new book is because itās this multiple month commitmentā¦and that means waiting a long time to read it in full, and obviously more money invested.
but I know those days are goneā¦they make more money stretching out a story over 5-6 issues that could be told on one or two nowā¦so now I just buy a couple titles. I aināt got time for anything more.

Physical quality, Iād agree. Overall quality though? Not so much for me. Comics use to be fun. Fun to buy, fun to read, fun to collectā¦
Comics are going the way of trading cards back in the mid 90s went, a chase for the ratios and whatās going to be valuable with rising retail values with sub par story tellingā¦ Itās doesnāt seem to carry the same enthusiasm for me anymore compared to the 80s. Itās getting to the point now just a book I want to read might get gobbled up from speculators to resell at inflated secondary market prices and itās a total let down on missing out on just something I just wanted to effing read but canāt be bothered paying ridiculous prices driven on FOMO and Hype!

If feel like that is just part of getting older. Many, many comics in the 80s had bad art and mediocre stories. The average book today is better than the average book in 1985. Just my opinion.

I think he keeps his technique pretty simple. Doesnāt bogged down with backgounds and complex shading. Vibrant colors makes his work stand out as well.

At first glance, I thought the right side background had a face inside a hood.
