Jim Comics Picks

Thanks for that insight…i have just gotten 2 copies of #6…thats a full 1st in there i think.

This is the kind of stuff I dislike. Jim hasn’t put out a video in 10 days, but where in the hell are they getting that this is his pick and giving this guy credit.

I know some dislike Bill from Economics in Comics, but at least that guy reads the books and even looks through them when he gives out any advice or thoughts.

Yeah, they have had ongoing banter and friendly jabs at one another on instagram and such for about as long as I’ve followed either of them to be honest.

I’ve said it before but it’s just really sort of comical to watch and shows the power of social media in a sense. A true self fulfilling prophecy when it comes to comic books. Jim can talk about a comic book (a recent example would be Thor #700 and Black Galactus) that really wasn’t a book anyone cared about. Jim’s video creates a bit of movement on the comic for those that follow him. Then, just a few days later, Key Collector takes that information and the slight uptick in interest and sales and uses it to highlight the book in the Top 20 Trending books which then creates more buzz and interest (and sales) and presto magic…a pretty much fodder book becomes one that can be easily sold.

They have followed that formula so many times. Now clearly, any social media channel or person or even our forum right here can create hype and discussion on something that can move the needle on a book…but Jim and Key Collector both have very good followings so they have become extremely good and having impacts upon any book they focus their eye on.

It comes down to why and who is left holding the bag. I can honestly ask, why move the needle on certain books? Is it because they are trying to sell or move product? Is it for commissions on affiliate links? (Don’t get me wrong, I also sell comics and get commissions) but, why? Is it a natural progression from just spotlighting a book they like? And then lets say there is an upward trend because one mentioned it causing copies to move, and then it is added to a list causing prices to spike and people buying it at inflated prices, what happens when the short cycle is over, they are left with a comic they can’t sell and do not really care about.

Agreed, I sometimes wonder if it is truly just for the sake of “hey…watch this…I bet I can move this one…” Looking back there have been a few really, really out there books that have followed this pattern.

Certainly there could be cases where it is just something to make a quick buck, but I really think it is more of just the above.

Again, I watch the videos…enjoy them all in all and hope my posts don’t come across and bashing him. It is just really an interesting facet of the hobby. The way in which people and a hobby can be manipulated. Myself included in some cases.

I think that is there biggest crime they don’t think about the end cycle and what it does to their followers in the end. I’m sure they are focused on proving they are the place to go for trending comic book information before everyone else, this creates clicks, the commissions and affiliate links follow from the more clicks. They don’t think about what happens to those that hop on the train and are left with books that never had any spec value and will return to nothing when next week they do another video.

What the public will find interesting and which books get some heat is incredibly fickle. Look at these forums and the ‘enthusiastic discussions’ that happen over certain books. They need content, don’t have any way of accurately predicting it, and will pick something to make sure they continue to try and prove they are the authority on trending comics.

Nick worships @Anthony because the minute Anthony posts something, Nick reposts it without having the courtesy to give Anthony credit. Shameful.

Because the ownership of KCC is trying to build up the site as being the absolute leading source for all things comic spec and market so that it can be sold at the best price. If KCC gives out too much credit why would anyone want to buy the platform? KCC would no longer be the Woodward and Bernstein of Comic Spec & Comic Market, but rather a gossip site or aggregator of spec.

That’s a good point and it makes me curious to know how many subscribers Nick’s app has. I would like to crosscheck that with the average daily views of CHU.

Wouldn’t doubt there’s a correlation there
