We can ask the same question to all the major companies out there that use Kickstarter. And the answer drum roll … because they dont want to use their own money…
Winner winner… chicken dinner… basically, they’re getting the consumers to fund their new products so it’s less of a risk for them and it takes away from the whole spirit of what a kickstarter is for… that’s why I only support individuals who might not have the capital to do the project themselves.
It’s not a big deal for me if small publishers do that as long as I’m getting a good/great deal for my money. Coffin Comics and Stranger Comics are my favorites because I get a lot of swag and usually one or two ‘free’ comics with the deal.
My last (5) Kickstarters that I supported were:
Stranger Comics ‘Tales of Asunda: Niobe’
Coffin Comics ‘Chaotica: Spellbound’
Coffin Comics ‘Lady Death: Imperial Requiem’
Enormous ‘Extinction Level Event’
Mad Wolf and Cop #1 (still waiting on my eBas Collectors Crate)
Very happy with all 5 of those!
Those are smaller publishers though, I totally get that. Skybound is an imprint of Image, just seems a little tacky.
Skybound probably makes more money now than Image does entirely…
Currently backing Out There as I’m really fond of David Hitchcock’s art, but also recently supported Chris Askham’s Switchblade Stories because I’m a big fan of his work. There’s been a good few others in the past as well, and I’ve been very lucky that they’ve always delivered on their promises, though I do tend to back projects where the creator has an online presence, even if it is just social media.
To the point of the GI Joe Kickstarter.
It’s been incredibly successful & unless I’m not understanding the purchases correctly, it is a bit of a no brainer to not invest in (at minimum) the lowest tier $75 Compendium (you would have to select either the Cobra or Joe version).
The number of crazy stretch goals has nearly grown to the point of absurdity now). Because those stretch goals now include a couple of exclusive comics I think you could easily sell of some of the stretch goals stuff to pay for the compendium.
For me, issues 1-50 were the best anyway so I wouldn’t mind having them in the volume one anyway.
At any rate, if you haven’t checked it out recently, you may want to review the stretch goal stuff.

Looks like you can add extra copies of the stretch goals ti the order?
Heck, a typical Compendium alone sells for more than the $75 ($25 extra for shipping) these are at.
I don’t know, honestly seems like a great deal relatively speaking.
I would agree. If I wasn’t saving up to buy a key I’d be tempted…hard to resist.
Its over but I backed this one for the SIKC hardcover, only cause im a huge fan of the series

The GI Joe book (s) keep knocking the goals out of the ballpark and they have added yet one more now.
Even since the last post they hit the added reprint of that GI JOE Special Edition. (along with the cool issue #21 reprint)
I sound like a used car salesman and the goal will hit regardless but I really believe that you’ll come out winning if you can swing even the single $75 omnibus.
3 hours left to back this one:
I just backed the GI Joe Kickstarter with the M.O.B.A.T. (both Compendium 1 Joe and Cobra hardcovers) and added on one each of the McFarland edition and color #21.
This got me all of the Joe AND Cobra stretch goals which is what I wanted instead of having to choose between the two.
Went from 3.497 MILLION to currently, 3.519 MILLION in the last hour
30 hours left to back this one:
Additionally, I backed the Marvel Art of Michael Turner - Slipcase Edition - Mystery Tier. He is my comic book hero and I’ve forever loved his art. I get the slipcase, 184pg hardcover w/ dustjacket and a mystery “tip-in” (looks to be a 9"x12" sketch print), 6"x9" mini print and a holofoil card.
That’s it. I’m done with comics until mid-July
Now do transformers!
That would be awesome, but not until August so that I can save up
Man, getting out of buying new releases has really enabled me to add to my PC!
I back it as well, couldn’t resist, although the shipping to Canada was an absolute murder.
I’m going to make my decision in a half hour, going down to the wire
I’m not the biggest GI Joe fan and haven’t read any of the source material but I did love the cartoons. There’s so many extra swag added that it makes this a no brainer.
