Unsurprisingly, online criticism coming out because the black experience is discussed in a story about a black protagonist. One, who in the comic books, was introduced during a time of nearly all-white heroes.

Agreed. They are trying hard with character development. And I appreciate that. I’ve always said it’s characters first, and then comes the action and drama. And that’s also why I’m hanging in there.
I will ask this question though - who shoots rifles in their neighborhood backyard and doesn’t have the cops there within 5 minutes? This family is doing it often. ![]()

Yes, that is true, and I think most expected some sort of commentary on that aspect of John’s character since that is how he came to be. I don’t think most people are against showing troubles and challenges some people face and how that affects their character but that Hollywood keeps overly preaching to everyone and this show is doing it a little too much at times. Sometimes people just want to be entertained. I think writers and producers forget that at times. It doesn’t mean don’t show how a character became what he or she is all about, but have more of a balance. From reading comments on other sites many viewers are a little tired of feeling talked down to and the entertainment industry as a whole has been doing a lot of that for a while now. The whole “how is your white man” lines in a previous episode was a bit ridiculous as well and I think took a lot of viewers out of the fantasy of the story. Kind of an eye role moment and wasn’t needed to drive the story or character further. Also, they made John’s mother more of a psychopath instead of a strong mother/woman showing her son tough love. I don’t think that was the writer’s intention so a bit over the top, making her unlikable to most. That’s how I see it.
Also unsurprisingly the online discourse over the episode is almost more entertaining than the episode itself

As well there shooting it at their garage. Who shoots a gun in there back yard at their house or garage?
FWIW it looked like a .22, so the bullets probably are stuck in the wood.
Well, in the 1970’s I lived in Florida for a little while. I remember walking down the street with a friend when I was 5 and a man was sitting in his chair with a 22 riffle by his side (pretty sure it was a 22). He asked if we wanted a squirrel tail. We said sure. He picks up his rifle shoots a could shots into a tree, and down fall two squirrels. He picks them up, pulls out a hunting knife, cuts their tails off and gave them to us. Off we went, holding bloody squirrel tails. My next door neighbor was a lot like Crocodile Dundy. If a gator came out of the swamp and thought it was a good idea to walk down the street out he would come, shoot it and make belts and boots out of the hide. A cop never showed up…but that was Florida in the 70’s. It was awesome!
My dad is from Florida. From a town called Williston. Very interesting story about its origins. Anyway, the story sounds cool except the bloody squirrel tail.
I still have it somewhere in a box in my parents attic. Creepy that I kept it, but it held together well enough. I still remember the face my mother made when I brought it home. I think I told her it was fake or something like that or she would have never of let me keep it. It has been decade since I have been to FL but I always got a kick out of the people there. A bit odd, but mostly good folk.
That is exactly how I would describe my dad’s side of the family.
We went down for my dad’s 67th birthday years ago. Oh boy. One of my dad’s siblings spouse had died and they were toting around photos of everyone with his body in the coffin. I had never seen coffin slides before.
My sister in law went to grab a small snake in the grass. One of my cousins pulled out a shovel and cut its head off. She said “yeah, that’s a copper head, you don’t want to touch it, you gotta take their heads off”
And none of that was the weirdest. I got called a blasphemous heathen for having tattoos by my dad’s sister’s husband. Yet he said some of the foulest things I had ever heard. Dad pulled me aside and reminded me I was in the Deep South when I said I was gonna punch him in the face.
Yep, sounds about right.
