Mark Spears Covers

Speaking of “influencers” I got a chuckle when the guy from Bronzeville Comics got duped by influencer Bry’s Comics. Many years before RDJ was revealed that he was coming back to the MCU as Doctor Doom, Bronzeville bought a CGC slab of Infamous Iron Man 1 off of Bry’s for $200. Bry had been pumping it up as a good spec play.

When RDJ got announced as Doom, Bronzeville was absolutely ecstatic that he was finally able to unload the slab for $200 and got his money back lol. It had been sitting there for years losing money.

What I want to know is why would a 60+ yr old lifetime comic book collector that has an encyclopedia knowledge of the comic book industry fall prey so easily to a 20 something year old influencer who admitted he only got into the comic book hobby during the comic boom? If the Infamous Iron man was such a great spec play why would Bry be selling it at an inflated price at that time to you? Why would he just not keep it if he believed in it so much? It was a straight pump and dump.

It was crazy times. We’re all smarter now. If you
Survived the comic boom and are still enjoying comics and not too jaded, consider yourself fortunate!

Okay, so I opened my first 50 bags. The collation is HORRENDOUS. Up to 6 duplicates for a couple regular covers. And several others with two or three dupes. I was fortunate on the hits; however, and look to make a nice profit on the hits alone. Already sold 7 out of the 50 books and made my money back. Kinda insane.

I’m still waiting for mine to come in the mail for me. I asked some of my local shops about it just to grab an extra bag maybe and they said they sold out fast. If this thing becomes hard to find despite how many copies were printed that’s pretty wild.

If you want to make a complete set of base covers, you’re hunting on Ebay for sure… not even figuring in making complete sets of the special covers.

There have got to be eBay sellers that went big (like 1000
Blind bags) and are going to be listing all their duplicate books in listing you can bundle. Has to be cheaper than buying more bags…

I’ve been watching the largest online retailer in Canada and their stock. On Tuesday night, they had 600+. Wednesday morning they had 565, last night they had 545, this morning there was 511 and now 488. They have plenty but they are selling them about $1 more than anyone else and still selling about 50 a day.

Those Winter Blind Bag covers are a big let down. Easy skip.

I like the covers that I’ve seen. I think I’m most let down by the 1 of 1 unholy grails for monster and the wolf, they are just recolored existing covers. The same kind of crap Marvel does on 2nd prints. I think the winter blind bags will be ordered less, which means fewer of each cover. Completists will be going to ebay to buy covers vs. buying blind bags and getting mass duplication.

Just remember if the Monsters line keeps going, keeps gaining popularity and does get a Netflix or MAX type live action series a lot of these comics will be in even more demand. If as a collector you aren’t all that happy with how the product is being handled that is one thing but if you are looking for potential profit, the more popular covers and the more rare issues will more than likely take a good jump in price when a show is released. Because of the art and theme there is still potential for organic growth as well and a good chance profit can be made. For me, I like the art and horror theme so I am also collecting them, but I have no problem making a few dollars on the extras of this series I will have, the Kickstarter when it eventually gets here and of course the first series. There is always a chance the popularity for all things Mark Spears will start to fall flat, but I think the train will keep running for a little while longer.

Aren’t most of these monsters public domain? I don’t know how Netflix etc would make anything related to Mark Spears unless they literally call the shows Mark Spears’ Monsters. :man_shrugging:t2:

Maybe. Some of the characters are his own creations though.

All the monsters are public domain. However, you cannot use Bela Legosi’s likeness with out it being approved by Universal and the Legosi family.

But the surrounding characters are all Spears original characters

anthony are you going to do a blind bag video?

We’re all waiting for it…

How many Wonka b….er…blind bags did you get…?

I want an hour-long video of Tony ripping bags and cursing at how tired his fingers get!

Wasn’t aware of this, apparently Spears put 22 comics from his collection in the bags as well.
