Sister thread to EBay Headaches.
Oh boy can’t wait for this.
So it’s been a while since I sold on Mercari. But I have 2.2k items sold on eBay over 25 years…same account. And I’ve maybe had 2 returns for item not described?
Anyway…I’m 1 for 2 with Mercari since starting back up. This person wanted to bundle two lots of comics. His initial offer was less than either of the two…so basically wanted more than half off.
So against my better judgement, I entertained this…trying to get them to go higher…but I’d come down maybe 25% and they would counter with $1 or 50 cents…that should have been it. Person obviously is a stickler…but so really just wanted to get rid of the books…so I caved.
These books are not in great shape. One had a tear (which I pointed out) and the others were VF range. It was pretty clear in the photos (front and back) what they were getting. Sure enough, I get the return notice.
So it seems like the seller does not get a say in this process. As the reason provided was “not as described” and I’m not provided anymore information from Mercari. But I’m told to make corrections to my listing!! Hard to do when you get no feedback on what was “not as described.”
But I can see why returns are likely going to be a higher rate on Mercari than on EBay. Mercari pays for return shipping and seller cannot dispute the ruling. That just encourages returns for the slightest opinions by the buyer.
Well, we’ll see what I get back.
But I can tell from what this person is selling they are a flipper…so I’ll post in the buyer block thread so others can avoid if they wish.
What’s funny is that even though both items were listed as 1 lbs shipping individually, mercari combined them and and gave me a shipping label for 15.9 oz.
So now it’s on the buyer to ship them back with the wrong weight on the postage label…we’ll see how this goes. Could get interesting.
I have sold 468 items on Mercari without a return.
Don’t get me wrong though I have had my issues with Mercari but knock on wood. Not a return
I’ll be sure to point the buyer in your direction for better service…
No thank you.
I’d worry more about people switching out the book bought for a lower graded copy.
If the weight was lower probably cherry picked the books he wanted and sent back the rest for a full refund.
And then you get guys like this guy
Hits me up asking me if I could do a bundle deal on two TMNT exclusives u have up for $22 each. Asked if I would do $40 for the pair. Well I literally have $0 into the books, they were promos for me so I said yeah. Wait two days and then I follow up. I said to bundle you have to add them to the cart and then hit the bundle button.
He responds asking if I could just send a bundle offer and he would accept it.
2 minutes after he said it I sent it
He ghosted me yet again.
Why waste people’s time?
I’m going to try Mercari for the first time selling stuff. Does anyone know what their current 1099 policy is? eBay’s is clear. I just need to know what I am getting into to avoid headaches.
They didn’t issue me one. I am reporting the income anyway and taking the deductions as well.
I can say in the month of February I sold 18 comics on Mercari and 13 on eBay.
Did you sell more than $600 on mercari? They wouldn’t send you one if you didn’t.
Yet another bundle with an offer less than either book on its own.
Declined. And blocked.
Wish there was a F—- Off button.
I always counter stuff like that at 0.01 less than I had it listed at (you can’t offer back higher than the list price at least on eBay). If you can’t figure out that I’m telling you to “F… off” your not paying attention.
I have had a few people like that. Decline and block is the right response.
And yes, over $600 thankfully I just printed out the report.
I think by law there are supposed to send you a 1099. But maybe they subtract all the other expenses for you, unlike eBay.
Once again Mercari allowed items to be bundled together, and did not combine the weight of each item. It chose the lowest shipping weight of 3 individual items.
Any idea how to stop this from happening? If each item weighs 12 oz, I should get a shipping label for 36 oz (2 lbs, 4oz.).
I can’t seem to figure out why this keeps happening. Does the person making the offer select the shipping weight?
Here’s what Mercari has…it says shipping is calculated by combining…but it does not do this.
Buyer-paid shipping for bundle offers is calculated by combining the maximum weight of each of the items in the bundle, while using the lowest cost shipping carrier in the expected weight class on the Mercari prepaid label. The combined maximum weight of the items may not always equal the actual bundle package weight printed on the Mercari prepaid label, but neither the buyer nor seller will be charged overage charges by Mercari in these cases.
So I guess I just how USPS doesn’t reject the package when I drop it off and the postage doesn’t match the weight…so ridiculous.
