Modern Comics Heating Up (2026 Edition)

White Sky was held back at all shops in my area. If on your pull you were good, otherwise no bueno.

Lots of that Jaws cover here but zero of that Death fight or Death to Pachuco#5.

The shop game has changed these days (for me anyway). All about being savvy with FOC or quickly snagging books I missed on eBay before they really skyrocket.

As for White Sky, here’s my story.

I got there about 8 minute LCS before opening. No one waiting outside, But UPS was delivering so I walked up and it said “open” and I walked in and the clerk just said hi. A few others were in the store already, wandering around clueless. I don’t think they were there for White Sky.

One older mangy person did walk in and immediately asked if th new overstreet guide was out…which I found entertaining because who even uses that anymore?? I guess it has some interesting things unique to it….or maybe if you just like flipping through pages to see all the different books out there for fun. Anyway….

So I immediately go to their image section and there is one copy of A. I grab it (and a few other new issues) and go up to pay. They did hold a copy so I asked if it was ok to buy two…they didn’t say anything…just rang me out. Didn’t seem to care.

One person I did not recognize came through the door as I was leaving who looked to be on a mission…so I just left before ai had to hear the clerk potentially have to tell him they are sold out if he was looking.

But overall…I’m making it more dramatic than it really was. My shop doesn’t have more than 1 or 2 shelf copies of anything but maybe Batman or Spider-Man these days…there are other shops within an hour that would so I think the flippers and speculators don’t come on Wednesdays anymore…

That’s good for me, I suppose.

I grabbed a death fight. Had one copy…why not for $4?
No Death Cab for Cutie…er…to Pachuco…of any cover.

MCS is selling White Sky 1A for $25.

EDIT to add: is this a new record for MCS price hike on a brand new issue?

Now that’s a Dirty Flipper. Should ban him from the shop!

Put in the effort like the rest of us and hit multiple shops grabbing just a few.

Gives us “clean” flippers (lol) a bad rep!

Speaking of White Sky, I just sold a 1A for $40 (had a spine tick) in like 4 minutes. That’s crazy.

Just did a quick check of eBay…saw active BINs for about $40 and clicked on them…they all were coming up as sold.

Can anyone confirm this? Wondering if it’s about to get nuts.

This seems to be the lowest BIN. Guy has 14 copies…

Must be the guy Anthony saw grabbing copies with his dirty hands…ships from Maryland…(I kid…I didn’t look where he shops from).

Second shop. Was slow on the draw. Guess who had just came in. 8 copy guy from the previous store. This shop is my honey hole. I warned them about it. They had the copies behind the counter. He mulled around a bit saw I had one and asked them for one. I c-blocked him and asked if he just grabbed the stack from the other shop. The store said all their copies were reserved.

Things are getting crazy at the LCBS the last few weeks!

Hit up three stores this morning. Two of the shops were sold out of White Sky. When I talked to the owners at each, they said that they only ordered 5 copies originally and only had 1-2 for the shelf. While I was at each one, they had numerous people come in asking if they had the book and when they said “no”, turned around and walked out. The first store I went to fielded at least two phone calls also from people looking for this. Amazing what D’Orc can do to the spec game.

Last store I went to had about 10 copies on the shelf, but were limiting customers to one copy only (great policy if you ask me). Interested in reading it to see what the fuss is potentially about. If it goes past $50, will most likely take the money and run.

What’s funny is that while folks are chasing this book around, there are so many other books that can be sold that are just sitting on shelves.

My pick ups this week were:
-Bleeding Hearts #1 Chris Bachalo variant (2 copies at cover)
-Knightfight #2 Jorge Molina variant for cover
-Knightfight #3 Cover A for cover price
-Aquaman #12 Cover A (2 copies for cover)
-Flash #28 Cover A (2 copies for cover)
-Ultimate Spiderman #24 (1:100 for $40)-about time this finally came out!!
-Absolute Batman #17 (1:25 for $14)

As a side note, took the money from D’Orc, DC KO, and Absolute Batman and was able to purchase an original 11X14 lobby card set from one of my favorite movies of all time, Blade Runner (1982).

Are folks saving their spec money or buying grails?

Good hunting everyone.

I had to look this up. Is this the reference?

Good for you calling him out. What was his response?

This. It’s almost like these flippers don’t hang out here and get the juicy info….for free!!!

Both.

Granted I only have one comic I’d consider a“grail” O want to buy…and I’m so far from getting there anyway I buy a nice comic here and there when th opportunity presents itself.

One being Canto 1 9.8.

I also grabbed (what I’m really hoping is) a very high grade newsstand of ASM 361 (raw)…to replace my 9.6 direct PC

But considering taking funds to buy a nice book that I feel I can flip later for a profit…rather than sit on it…as the comic market seems to be trending upwards (slightly) again…maybe a nice DC bronze age horror key in high grade.

But my basic strategy has been to put most aside, but use a portion to take chances on new books and treasure hunting for immediate flips. Still Not really buying comics to hold.

He didn’t get one anyway so it doesn’t matter, but he knows what he did. The shop that he hit earlier text him told him not to bother coming back so he’s losing places to go

I ended up waiting for copies today at Moore on the way in the mail

People become so myopic when they’re out there for hot books

Here is a fun one Star Wars number 10 out today had a Boba fett action figure cover now not all stores got copies of it because the distributor said there was an inventory problem and the book is not being reprinted. So a bunch of stores did not get copies if you happen to see one might be worth grabbing.

For the retailers on here, did anybody else get that notification people go nuts for allocation alerts?

Went to one shop I had called. They said if they got any copies of White Sky they’d hold me one. I arrive and they’re talking with another customer so I grab cover B off the shelf. Within a minute after that it was all gone. Then the employee comes over and gives me my stuff for the week and they got me a cover A! They sometimes let you buy multiple covers of stuff so I was gonna do that but another person came in right after me asking if they had any copies with any cover because they wanted to check it out. I’ve seen this person before and they are pleasant so I felt bad and gave them the cover B I had. They were happy.

I went to my next shop that I had also called ahead of time and they said they had a single B cover for me. So it worked out in the end! I have an A and a B cover, woot!

Death Fight Forever was plentiful at some of my shops. Grabbed an A and B. The Jeff with Daredevil book seemed to have a decent number of copies at most stores, too. Mega Man X 1 has a 1:5 ratio cover that looks like a video-game case. I bought one for $4/cover as it just looked snazzy. Seems it is trending for like $25/ratio. No sugar skull variants were anywhere of Death to Paucho 5.

Did not look, but I know what cover you’re referring to.

That style of blister care is not one I have any attachment to…most Boba covers I grab…but didn’t care for this one.

So didn’t look for it.

I still have a bunch of these in a box, so I didn’t order any of the new one.

I used my holiday sales to pick this up last month:

Probably the last of the Bronze Age keys I really wanted. I’ll always keep a look out for a mid-grade or better ASM 129, but if that doesn’t happen, I’m fine. Silver-wise, I’ll never own an AF 15 and I’ve made peace with that. More interested in original art if I ever have that kind of scratch to play with.
