I absolutely remember them being known fakes. I worked at a comic shop at the time. These and the “gold” Batman #497s are the first two books that I ever encountered counterfeits of.

This one seems to have cooled a bit but the virgin 1:20 variant of this cover is ticking up. A couple of auctions are $30-40+ with a couple of days to go.
