Modern Comics Heating Up (Those With Potential Too) (Part 1)

We could make the forums only viewable by actual logged in users but then… that would be kind of sucky!

Comparing comics/novels growth to a TV show growth is apples and oranges

Having those two series together with different numbers looks like it’s either a comparison or contrast. High republic would look more similar to miles morales type fan numbers.

That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying, IF HR gets a show and IF the show is well received, then there is major room for growth.

OK. That makes total sense.

JimComics is a good dude, he’s a reader and collector. He doesn’t sell his comics and you never see him showing a slabbed comic in his collection. I poke fun at him sometimes but to me his influence is justified. He’s built up his channel from scratch and cultivated a following that trusts him and his opinions. Sometimes he’ll get things wrong but it isn’t because he has an agenda.

In the CHU forums we have drunkwooky and many regulars who contribute here on a daily basis who are revered here. When drunkwooky shares with us his knowledge we go to online shops like Villaingaming, TFAW, Dark Dominion Comics (not Dominion Comics) and buy the books before there’s heat on them. JimComics caters to the more casual comic collectors who trusts him and seek out places like ebay to get their books. It’s very daunting for a new collector to be up to speed on all the news. They don’t always know where to go.

Good for Jim for cultivating a loyal audience. He’s wholesome and deserves the influence he gets. There are other avenues like KeyCollector that I find rather slimy to be honest when they pump exclusive covers from their sponsors and put them on their hot lists and take money from creators to send out an alert. Also don’t get me started on ComicTom. There are much worse places to get info from than JimComics.

just getting a flood of (not quite lowball) offers for the 6 copies of SWHRA Annual I have - people wanting to buy them all in bulk.

The problem isn’t Jim’s Comics… the problem is likely the sheep who buy any and everything because one person mentions something, whether it’s true or not.

good speculators selling to bad speculators

That’s a bingo

I like JimComics for a couple reasons. The first is that he seems genuine in his love for the hobby. He isn’t all about the money. Maybe he upsets the comic selling community when he says “Don’t pay stupid eBay prices”, but I appreciate that he actually READS the comics.

Secondly is that he truly seems to want to share information, and if he sees something is coming down the pipeline, he doesn’t wait until FOC is finished. He’ll let you know a couple months in advance so everyone can get in on it rather than holding the information to themselves until it is too late.

Is he always right? Of course not, but you can tell he loves what he does and I happily add his videos and IG to my arsenal of information gathering. There aren’t many like him.

Most people don’t seem to want to invest if they have to hold. They’d rather buy once it’s established and hope they can ride the wave.

Are they sheep? Or are they people who don’t invest the time that we do to figure these things out in advance?

Time is a valuable commodity, and its value is relative to the user. People like us value FOC prices, so we spend a lot of time on this hobby doing as much research as we can in an effort to mitigate as much risk as we can.

Other people have better things to do and maybe spend 30 minutes of their week watching videos on Youtube and buy when a comic starts to stand out from the crowd.

I don’t think they’re sheep. They just have a different lifestyle.

And in respect to Jim’s videos on HR, outside of the ratios, we’re talking about people buying up Star Wars comics with first appearances in them that range from cover-$30. The recommendation is smart at the current price points.

Also, selfishly, I’m a little pissed at Jim’s Comics. I was buying the key issues on the cheap for the last few months and that ship has sailed lol.

You wanna make money flipping comics, you have to put in the time and research. Theres no excuse.

Listening/watching YouTube videos of people pumping comics is fools errand. Sheep will buy on the crest, not the trough. Card collectors in the hobby.

To set the record straight, I too enjoy Jim’s videos. I agree that he seems genuinely interested in the material he’s talking about as a reader.

Ahem, you didn’t mention me as being revered for my awesome jokes. I’m hilarious, at least my Dad tells me I am.

Fair enough. I dont deny his passion or his following. I just think that nobody should buy something because of what they watched on YouTube. The influence I was speaking of isn’t a knock on Jim’s efforts to build an audience. I believe the ‘influence’ is a bi product of Jims effort and passion he shows in his videos, and not necessarily Jims intentions. The influence says more about the audience than the host. That is not a blanket statement, so, again, no ill will towards any of his viewers. But, we all know that buying after the videos is usually not a good time to be buying. It is what it is. Everybody do their thang. :beers:

Buying after Jim’s video drops is the worst time to buy :joy: however he does tell his followers to not pay the inflated prices for them. I suspect what happens is when his video drops a bunch of his followers immediately buy up all the cheap copies up on eBay causing the prices to spike.
