Modern Comics Heating Up (Those With Potential Too) (Part 1)

You dont sell to cover costs. That is stupid logic.

You invest and ride the wave.

I do both. I buy to sell on initial heat, covers the 9 copies I have ordered. Keep a coupe in reserve.

Sellers with a lot of overhead would disagree

You sell early, you miss out on potential $$.

Isnt that why we spec and buy comics ?

I never sell to cover costs. You buy to invest.

If you think $25 is the max height for this book, sure, go for it. sell the book.

People still do it, regardless of our personal opinion

I for sure sell to cover costs. My goal isn’t to guess right and buy 392 copies of one book and get rich in 20 years. I’m not wise enough to predict those winners, nor do I have the space to hold that many books.

My goal is to collect what I want to collect, and sell enough to pay for that collection. I keep track of every expense and sale. So far my sales have paid for 88.2% of what I’ve spent this calendar year. The goal is 100%.

Yeah, moderns are not a good investment in my opinion. 9/10 books they heat up at new release will never reach that peak again…or not for a very long time.

The best risk management is not to put all eggs in one basket…again and again and again. Not only will you get burned on modern spec 9/10 times, you may even find yourself running out of room or paying for extra storage.

Cover your cost, make a little profit…and maybe hold a couple copies just on the off chance.

Can you elaborate? A book like “this one”? I’d say this is a one of a kind since no other book previously debuted this character.

I wouldn’t sell this particular book to cvr costs but others I would. It depends on if you think it will reach higher levels at a later time. Otherwise, your balance sheet will work against you when holding all kinds of books

A hot Marvel book.

BP 3 had loads of listings.

My other practice is I usually hold unless the price is near $20 before shipping. hands are tied on this one anyway unless the price holds at $20+ for a few weeks.

9 copies at $3.99 is $36. Paid $5 shipping on two places. Total is $46. Sell two copies at $25 each I have made my money back and have 7 copies to hold. All in all not a bad strategy.

Any business expert would laugh if you wanted to allow your inventory to soak up your profit margin

I sell to cover costs often but I dislike a ton of risk.

If you buy 5 copies and sell 1 for $20 the rest is all profit.

Wow, Spiderboy is hitting over $30 now. I had 1 copy that I got from my usual shop on Monday that I was too lazy to list. Glad I didn’t. Anyways, I went a few shops today avoiding the real busy ones because I don’t believe any of them would put Spiderman 7 on the shelf. I went to a few of my usual shops on Monday and already while I was in the store overheard multiple customers called in asking the shop to save them multiple copies come Wednesday. These people are idiots. As expected they tipped the shop off and the shop looked it up and pulled all their copies off the floor. I imagine the shops were flooded with calls the last few days, it’s always by these same idiots calling in to every shop in our area and buy nothing else. I even heard one shop said that they were selling it for $20 when the shop opens on Wednesday.

I went to a few shops I don’t normally go to today and none of them had any copies out on the shelf. Not even the A cover. I went at opening so it’s laughable that they don’t even have a copy of a Spiderman title on the shelf at store open. All the other issues had north of 15+ copies on shelf. Shops playing the spec game.

Well, regardless of the end result…as always, thank you to the members of this forum & @Anthony .
Perhaps I saw it elsewhere and there’s a chance I would have ordered it regardless, but it was this site and our discussion that made me go a bit heavier than I would have otherwise.
I honestly like the cover & design… nice colors. I like that Spider boy has a name which tells me there will be more to the story.

Folks will be getting their orders of 10 pretty soon, BUT… it’s still the first “hyped” book we’ve had in some time. Some folks and shops may have let their guard down.
Time will tell…at any rate, I appreciate all of you and this forum a great deal.
I think I’ll end up with 7 copies… that’s big time for me :joy:

I didn’t order any online. I forgot about it but I generally don’t pre order heavy based on a creator hyping a book on their twitter. Had I seen the cover before FOC I would’ve ordered a bunch. Really love the costume design with the kicks. I think it would really appeal the younger demographic. Oh well got my 1 copy so I’m not sure I will sell it now.
