Modern Comics Heating Up (Those With Potential Too) (Part 1)

As an aside while I was at the store today I was surprised that I found 3 copies of Deadly Neighbourhood Spidey 5 still on the shelf, the Razzah cover that was the #1 hot book on all the hot lists the last few weeks. Grabbed those 3 copies so it wasn’t a total waste of time. I generally knew I would not find a copy of Spiderboy today.

Never said I was a business. This is a hobby.

If I was I’d want to clear all inventory and not screw over customers by marking up on day of release.

I wasn’t talking about you in particular. Just that it’s foolish to not at least sell to recoup some costs

Have we heard anything else from those clowns at Big Time Collectibles that claimed they had issues with 400+ copies of this book? I haven’t received a cancelation message yet.

Ah, response makes sense now. Thanks for clarifying.

What do you guys use to find out how many listings and sold comics of a single issue on ebay? For example when someone says there’s currently 40 copies of Spiderman 7 listed on ebay but usually for really hot books there’s 200+ listings. I don’t imagine you guys are actually counting by hand how many copies are being listed up to 200.

I ordered 5 from btc I have no cancellation email and I ordered Sunday and showed out of stock the following day.

Bought one from @DarkDominionComics today as well so I’m covered either way.

I only pre-ordered one Spider-man #7, and almost dumped it based on the last minute FOC rush I saw online and because there are new spiders seemingly every other month.

More out of curiosity than anything, I went to the LCS closest to me a couple hours after they opened. They had all covers, heaviest on the Alex Ross Doc Ock (no surprise). No “limit 1” sign or markups.

Had there not been a Ross variant this month, I really wonder how that would have affected ordering.

The cover was not shown at FOC. Frankly I’m surprised FOMO is this strong as Dan Scott told everyone to buy this book. I know he has done this before but even if he was full of it, at FOC a copy was only 2.99 @25%, what have you got to lose if you buy like 3 copies, a 10 dollar lunch? Worse case you end up with toilet paper. Thanks for sharing the cover early on this board and glad everyone was able to get their copies!

Those $10 add up quick. If I got FOMO every time a creator pumps a new character or “Nothing will ever be the same again!” , I’ll be broke. It didn’t help that the cover was never shown until after FOC. I’m not going to blindly preorder every new character that comes out every month, there’s like 500 of them every month from both companies, 99.999% of the time they don’t amount to anything.

Also I think the FOMO is strong this time with the new Spiderboy because the costume design is strong with lots of potential because it’s a new younger next generation spidey character that’s from the 616 and not just some random character from a multiverse.

It seems like marvel is going to make him a big part of the 616 moving forward as you say. I’m also on board with the design being a big factor. The market has reflected that.

Anyone know a Bailey in the spider universe? I did a little digging just to see if it’s an old character revamped as Spider-Boy and couldn’t find anything. So I guess his identity is an all new character. Given his reaction on his brief appearance, I have a feeling he’ll get his own book down the line.

He’s always been around. We just haven’t seen him till now

Cover A also creeping up in price. As I expected since the cover was never shown pre FOC, lots of shops didn’t order it. Those who went to their LCS today probably didn’t find any copies on the shelf so now their fomo is kicking in and they’re picking up the A cover.

I was talking to my shop on Monday and they tried to order more from PRH before the flood of callers came in. Will see how that goes.

Have now sold my 2 Spoiler Covers for $25.99 each plus shipping. My costs are covered and still have more copies for later. Not to mention I have a cover A listed for $12. This book has legs (for now) and its free money from here on out.

If the cover A is going for this price now, wonder if this character somewhat takes off and what the 1:100 Alex Ross timeless can be worth down the road.

Absolutely, there are tons of first appearances all the time and no one is saying you should chase every single one. Do your research if you have you the time, watch those YouTube videos from people like economicsincomics, east meets west or infinity flux comics and you should be fine. First appearances of characters e.g. Worm in this past FOC should probably be passed on. Like him or hate him, Dan Slott is pretty big creator in the spider man universe e.g. silk, spider punk etc and yes red goblin as well. Given the heads up and hype on this one, I’m just saying I’m surprised as I would have expected stores to have order heavily. As some of you have mentioned, if you have multiple copies, I agree sell a copy or two now and the rest are icing on the cake to be kept raw or submitted as a 25 book prescreen to cgc for 9.8. Time will tell if this book will keep its heat.

So to update, I listed two copies of the Spoiler for $25.99 each, and they sold, one copy of cover A for $12.99 and it sold. Well past break even with 7 copies of the spoiler coming in and 1 more regular cover coming in.
