No BTT3 here either. Saw one copy of gang war and passed…guy behind me snatched it up as soon as I stepped aside.
Interestingly enough, I took a gamble and went for this book first, knowing I might be able to beat the person behind me to the UBP1 still (which there weren’t any anyway)…so wasn’t a total loss!
I’ve heard it’s about a 1:3 ratio.
The person did sweep back to where this book was looking for it I assume. I WIN!!!
Ok, so now I’ve seen multiple other reports that Penguin did actually somehow lose a ton of copies of UBP…12k copies. Echoes specifically what my shop told me and again, I know everyone thinks I’m naïve but this owner just doesn’t really give a crap about spec or flipping, etc…he just wants his pull copies for his customers.
Anyway, if they don’t show…well, that’s a bunch of copies gone…if they do show up eventually…that’s a big influx of more books.
I got the last UBP #1 (BossLogic) at my LCS within an hour of opening. I think they only got like six copies, though.
I’m going to a few shops today but I’m totally expecting to be shut out. US1 was completely out of control when it heated up. I’m expecting a ton of people to be calling the shops in my area for UBP. I’m fully expecting no shelf copies. I’m going to see the vibe and I generally enjoy going to shops to look for things to pick up and chatter about. We’ll see how it goes.
I literally haven’t done that Wednesday warrior thing in probably 25 years.
I think I might actually go out to a new small store that just opened and see if I can’t get a few of these there.
The gas, the time effort ($100 an hour - nod to D-Rog), doing battle against other shlubs, & the risk of not getting a book(s) was not enough to get me out of the house for a few bucks profit. But that’s just been my opinion for last 25 years.
I visit my shop on Wednesday anyway as I generally like going there to talk to friends there and stuff. It’s really more about hanging out and the thrill of the hunt more than making a few bucks. I fully expect UBP to level off after today as supplies start flooding the market. Just today I’ll be going to a few more shops to see the vibe. The hobby should be fun.
Another book worth keeping an eye on is the Beneath the Trees 3 1:25 which I expect to be a ghost at most stores (can’t imagine many stores ordering 25 copies even with heat).
I typically don’t Wednesday warrior it as i don’t have many stores near me that are easy to get to. Being in NYC this week worked out to me stopping by the neighborhood store. Thundercats seem to also he selling very well but as others have mentioned the stores were on top of that one. The Batman 142? first part of jokers origin seemed also to be selling well with Royal Collectibles only having under 4 copies each of the foil and cover A on top left corner of shelf. Underneath was the white board with a handwritten message thar UBP was sold out.
I have sold two of my four UBP 1 A for $30 plus shipping. Keeping one and holding one to see where it goes. Also have two other copies coming from Midtown.
Loving this ultimate launch. 2024 has been a great year for flipping so far.
Looks like PRH is getting into the spec game!
Imagine on top of low orders (due FOC being back in December), demand off of USM1 AND the supply being cut 12k?!
FOMO CUBED!!!
Holding my sole copy…for now….
I go back to my experience this morning…I have never been denied a hot book when I’ve requested it be put aside by my LCS and I’ve hit up my shops when the open. In fact, I usually get 2 or more copies.
My shop doesn’t play the spec game either. And yet they denied me. I didn’t ask why because I asked for it post FOC and figured they likely distributed what little they had (1 or 2 shelf copies) to their biggest customers. I was
Also pressed for time. I’ll have to ask them next time I’m in.
Having shops on the way to work (or back) and a flexible work week helps.
Just found one on line. A shop I order from has cover A one per person. $11 shipped.
Hit up 3 close shops earlier today.
First had 1 copy of A held for me, as requested. Only thing on the shelf was a single copy of the Foreman variant.
Shop 2 were already completely out.
Shop 3 that I rarely hit had 2 A covers and 1 Bosslogic. That Bosslogic cover is pretty fantastic.
I’d guess shops didn’t order many of these, so they’ll probably be cleared out fairly quickly.
Went to 3 stores and there was a mob at all 3. Absolutely no chance I would find a copy, none on the shelf of any cover of UBP like I expected. Lots and lots of Thundercats and Batman 142. Only 1 shop had Beneath the Trees 3 so I picked that up. Hit the 3 shops closest to me and gave up on going to any other.
I listed my UBP two copies and they sold within the hour. It’s pretty wild to see so many books getting so red hot.
I also heard that Thundercats had 170k copies ordered. The comic biz is off to a good start in 2024 after a pretty slow Q4 last year.
Does appear to be on the rebound.
I now think UBP1 will stay hot for a little while. People are going to their shops and will find the shelf empty. Fomo will kick in and people will be scrambling to get a copy. I don’t have a copy and will move on to the next book. I figured there would be some copies on the shelf come release day. I underestimated the US1 effect, not sure why I did.
Definitely time to really add some focus to FOC. I mentioned before, but for me, anyway, shops simply aren’t bringing in books like they used to.
