Odds and Ends

Before January 1st, Canada had tariffs on certain U.S. products, primarily in sectors protected under its supply management system. These included:

  • Dairy Products: Tariffs ranged from 200% to 300% on items like milk, cheese, and butter to protect Canadian dairy farmers.
  • Poultry and Eggs: Similar high tariffs were applied to chicken, turkey, and eggs.
  • Grain Products: Some grains faced tariffs, though these were generally lower than those on dairy and poultry.

You are right 200% on dairy and poultry is not 25%.

Clothing is 18%

@anthony you are getting these 200%+ tariff numbers from Trump and he’s lying to Americans. Canada does not charge 200% tarrifs on American dairy product. It has to hit the USMCA quota for that tariff to come into effect. Translation, it has NEVER come into effect. Canada essentially charges 0% tariffs on American dairy and the other items you mentioned. This is the same for all the other countries where Trump says is charging 300% on American imports.

This video will break down how tariffs work and why Trump is lying. First 4 minutes of the video and it’ll explain all you need to know in layman’s terms.

Canada doesn’t import much dairy anyway. Most dairy products don’t meet the standards required for import.

except the beef and dairy tariffs canada has only goes into effect once they import a certain amount which they have never hit that amount not once.

Trump is also lying about the size of the trade deficit with Canada claiming it to be 200 billion. It’s closer to 50 billion. This is offset by the lower rates charged for energy by Canada. So really it’s near zero.

well yea, but alot of people get “their facts” from podcasts and social media,

‘Certain items’ is a far cry from ‘Canada charges us 25% tariffs on imports’, isn’t it? And, if you read the USMCA terms, the dairy tariffs only kick in after a certain import threshold - a threshold that hasn’t come close to being triggered since USMCA was signed.

That said, I’d like to see all tariffs across the US/Can border abolished. Softwood is tougher; the US industry claims - perhaps fairly - that the Canadian softwood industry is subsidized by stumpage fees.

We could balance the trade deficit by selling our energy products elsewhere.

On the positive side of this mess, is if you have any liquidity this will be a prime buying opportunity to invest some money. I’ve been buying as the market falls and will continue to do so.

Too much uncertainty and headline risk over the weekend. Defense is the name of the game right now.

Nope. Got it from cbc.ca.

Isn’t Canadian softwood harvested from public (government owned) lands?

Well that video above that I posted is also from CBC so not sure where you’re getting your misinformation from. That’s not how tariffs work.

Also btw, Trump has violated the USMCA (united States, Mexico and Canada) free trade agreement that he negotiated back in 2020. He knew he can’t impose these tarrifs on Canada and Mexico so instead he evoked the national emergency act which empowers the government to perform actions not legally permitted in the form of national security. This is usually done in a time of war and against adversaries, not against your 2 allies and the two biggest trading partners.

In this case he brought up the fentanyl crisis which is real. However only 43 lbs of fentanyl is smuggled into the USA from Canada which accounts for 0.02% compared to the 60,000 lbs being smuggled to the US from Mexico. He wants to destroy Canada economically so he can annex Canada like he wants Greenland. He’s a mad man.

That’s my understanding, which apparently translates into cheaper production, since US softwood producers incur costs to harvest.

also while bcw makes heir boards in the usa, their bags come from china. so those will increase like 60% soon

That’s what happens when you get your facts from Mainstream Media
