Yes, if it’s sterling silver… $102.46 right now is spot price. Most spoons and such are Sterling Silver like you said, so it’s probably around the 92.5% range of silver and rest is other metals, usually copper to make it stronger, etc. You can probably have them test the % at a “We Buy Gold/Silver” type of store… but remember, they’ll buy it for less than spot, it’s like pawn shop, they gotta make their money too.
That’s why fine silver (99.9%) doesn’t tarnish but those sterling silver silverware and jewelry will tarnish and you gotta polish them to make them look nice again. Now you know and knowing is half the battle… you know the rest… GO JOE!!! ![]()
Oh, you can verify the Sterling Silver as well, you might see those spoons and such stamped with a 925 on them, to indicate the silver content.
Very interesting. Thanks for the knowledge!
I sold a bunch of silver back when it hit 50 in 2010. Paid off some debts. I regret it now big time. All junk silver I had gotten out of change. But a lot. A ton of half dollars.
If you think it’s crazy check out this
1940’s silver war nickel - $5.83
1964 and below dime - $7.44
1964 and below quarter - $18.61
1964 and below half dollar - $37.21
This is the melt value of the silver in the coins
This is a bag of junk coins I found in change over the years. The bag is worth $400 now.
But that was 16 years ago. That’s a long time. You got rid of some debt, and who would’ve known what would happen in the year 2026? Plus with inflation, $50 in 2010 would be like $75 today.
It’s hard finding junk silver in change nowadays. I usually only fine the War Time nickels now. Not as exciting when silver was between $15 and $30 but now at $100… gonna be real exciting to pull those from change.
Yeah…should regret not buying it back later…which is kind of what you’ve been doing. selling it at $50 in 2010 was a good move.
Oh I do regret not buying more. But have been buying for my kids instead of me. I am doing all comic money in 1/4’s
1/4 to buy new comics
1/4 to family budget
1/4 in tax account
1/4 in kids investment account.
I have bought silver for the kids every year but not for the stash
Also have wasted so much money over the years on crap that I think doing it this way prevents crap purchases.
I thought I had collected more of the silver nickels…but seems like I just have what’s in my books.
I’d better grab that 1943-D before it gets expensive!!
I have always loved Buffalo Nickels. I have a ton of them. Most are undated because the dates wear away so easily but I love finding them.
We just got rid of a bunch of old silver utensils. Look on the back of them, some will be marked silver plate, some will just say silver, some have silver markings with numbers and such. The silver plate ones are not worth anything, but the other ones are and you would be surprised how quickly it adds up.
Everyone is going to start cashing in on old silver…gonna be like all those people sending their absolute Batman’s in to CGC!!

Just be real to yourself…
Comics and metal music. Two terrible ways to spend your time if you’re hoping to attract women. ![]()
Since I’ve been offloading comics and not really picking up new ones lately (except things to read), my hobbies now are vinyl collecting, started drawing again and trying to pick up water coloring and other media based art. Reading actual books has always been a thing for me. I collect coins but it’s mostly just Silver Coins new releases from US Mint nowadays, kind of stopped the whole trying to collect rare older coins but still love Walking Liberty coins and the Barber coins I really love as well outside of the Morgan and Peace dollars.
Been also trying to find more time with photography.
Model trains would be so fun but would require way more space and money…
Oh and I didn’t mention it in the last comment but LEGO’s too… but I think most of you all know this already, at least the regulars.
