Good point but they invented paper over there, so you would think they have the capacity to, unless the stock is not reproducible. As for the printing press, is that so hard to duplicate? I am not sure about graders, the 9.8 CGC books I saw recently had a corner missing and some had multiple spine ticks. Still, graders should be able to tell better than just the run of the mill collector.
Thatâs what I said. Lately CGC has been lacking and there is more 9.8 then ever before.
If one looked into it I doubt it would be hard to find a printer than can manufacture high acid low quality newsprint and yeah, I am sure there are still some old un-used rolls of comic newsprint sitting in warehouses from way back when.
Plenty of newspapers still being printed today. Look at Alterna, they still use newsprint paper stock. Itâs one reason I love picking up some of their issues just to smell them while reading⊠brings back memories.
That old newsprint smell always brings me back to when I first started collecting!
Just saw this post regarding Peach on FB
Can Yo Mutsu confirm? A very well known publisher has said Peach Momoko wants to start focusing more on her covers for publishers and less focus on store variant exclusive covers (which I strongly believe is a good thing).
This publisher also said that moving forward, any cover art that Peach creates for a publisher, such as art for incentive variants, basic covers, cover B/C, etc., can no longer be re-used for a store variant exclusive by zooming in/out, making the cover a virgin, changing the cover to grayscale/b&w, etc., unless the retailer is ALSO willing to buy the pencil/inks/original art. And even then Peach would still need to approve it, for which there is no guarantee.
Wow. Guess shes fed up with the zoom in exsclusives? I remember FB upset at the stores zoom in over priced variant. Good for her taking charge if this is true.
Frankies already buys the original art/inks/and sketch
Likely what was happening is she wasnât getting a cut or a smaller piece of the cut if they reused her original work to zoom in, etc. Good for her if thatâs the case. Get paid for your work. Donât let these stores whore out crappy redoâs of existing art just to make a buck off your nameâŠ
Another store exclusive for Peach. Pre-sales nearing $100 on ebay. This cover is ok, but the others for this series are so so good. Iâm intrigued.
Yeah I liked the cover as well jus went with A n B covers
Itâs glow in the dark thatâs all that matters
From my understanding, an artists work would have to been paid for by the store doing a variant. This is not cheap, and is quite a commitment, cash wise, for the store. The store, once approved for the variant, then receives a list of artists they can choose from to do their variant cover art. The store is also not allowed to talk to the artist, as per the variant contract.
Now, the stores realized that they can reuse artwork and not have to pay the initial artists fee, this drastically reduces their investment and it is kinda ripping of the artist. Mind you, their wholesale investment savings were definitely not passed onto the retail customers.
Iâm glad Peach is taking a stand. Iâm sure all the stores have been trying their best to exploit Peach, and other artists, up till now. I wonder what scam these store variants will come up with next to exploit the industry.
I hadnât heard of the zoomed in variants until it was done with Peachâs covers. Seems like they did it to Peach initially and she is like âno moreâ. But shame on the publishers for allowing it to happen as well. In all honesty, if a cover is done regular, black and white, sketch, sepia, reverse, negative, or how ever a store wants to do it, the artist should get paid for the use of the image.
I had no idea the store doesnât speak with the artist prior. If thatâs the case they are taking a sizeable risk. If it was Liefield heâd have to pay me.
I think what might of happened was⊠Peach commissioned work to BOOM! for cover art. Probably under their terms, they (BOOM!) now own the artwork and can do as they please for cover art, promotions, etc and likely made it so they could reuse, likely charging retailers who created those âzoomed inâ covers with the art on their own retailer exclusives, leaving out Peachâs share of the additional printings, using her work though.
So if thatâs the case, and Iâm doing this under all assumptions, she put a stop to that cause they likely went beyond the use of her workâs initial scope outlined.
If I did cover art, I would try to limit the covers. If I do a cover for X and you all say youâre going to print Y amount, stick to that amount. Any other amount we need to renegotiate terms of being paid if youâre going to sell such work to retailer to print additional Z amount of copies.
I donât think the contract would be the same for all publisherâs right? Wonât Marvel and Boom have different contracts?
