Possible Last Big Purchase

I just cant see the interest in the Eternals being sustained; none of the characters jumped out at me. I actually wished that Marvel had done the Inhumans instead of the Eternals, because the former had so many interesting chracters, not to mention Lockjaw. Not knocking the spec, and I’ve probably missed the spec boat on both properties.
I’m trying to pick up Bloodstone and Blue Marvel books but no luck with THE MAIN ONES.

In my experience, the results vary from month to month, depending on how things pan out after buying the books. I have been making about $1k after costs on average every year for the past decade or so with a similar strategy. Not enough to retire on definitely. LOL.

Folks in the US should do better since I live outside of the US and costs are higher due to shipping etc. Also, anything less than a $30 - 40 profit after costs makes little sense for the effort.

No offense. Eternals, Ms Marvel, or even Shangchi, I honestly don’t feel safe if I was going to bet my future livelihood on it.

These books been dropping like a rock after the movie released, (AKA West Coast Avenger - White Vision dropped like an anvil)

Shang Chi disappointed me too. Felt that it and the Snake Eyes movie was interchangeable, and not just because it was a Chinese character.

Oh, not advocating it for everyone. You have to be on your toes with the latest news to make it work. Think many of us do it for the thrill of it rather than the returns per se. It works on the same principles as stock investing, with more time lag.

And you want to know the latest SPOILERS! I always tell everyone to SPOIL me! Please tell me ALL SPOILERS! I actively seek out spoilers coz being the first to know is key to the strategy.

I went into Shang Chi expecting nothing and was pleasantly surprised.

While Snake Eyes ouch another GI Joe movie wasted…

Also the liquidity can be challenging and per IRS (as I recall), memorabilia is 30% tax rate. These MF can really kill a hobby… especially with the new GOVT survellience on your PayPal and other banking account, it almost impossible to go unnoticed (600 per year) should u decide to go flipping.

That works in my favour since I am not in the US lol

I’ve had about 28k in sales this year. I play a combined short term long term strategy. I buy stuff that I know I can make a decent profit ( I don’t want $20 sales) and will sell quickly. I buy books for the most part I already own because I’m shopping for profit not for a particular book. I pay all my bills one month with my profit and the following month I use my profit for the month to buy comics for my collection and the long term. But that’s the advantage I have with having a solid 1st appearance silver age through present and modern variant collection not much I need to buy for my collection that’s achievable without saving. Most people will see a good deal on a book they own and pass on it to focus on what they need I don’t. Sometimes I end up upgrading my copies and selling the old copy out of my pc so the short term also helps improve my overall long term.

Agree with the GIJoe assesment.
SPOILERS FOLLOW !!!
For ShangChi, I know Marvel wanted to reinvent the origin, but the whole ‘I know about my father the mass murderer, ten rings, mystical stuff, and I am a trained, martial artist, etc., and yet I am a valet’ schtick didnt work for me. The whole dragon stuff was great special effects but the dragon applies to Iron Fist not Shang-Chi, not to mention the hidden mystical city. And I think Awkwafina is funny and talented, but the buddy thing is tiresome. Was she his love interest or sidekick ? Also, ‘I am a valet, but in a few days I can shoot arrows at giant dragons’, NO !

The other last big purchase to consider is buying original comic book art. I have made more in the last decade selling original comic book art than I have selling comic books. I have made three times as much in the former over the latter in the past decade or so.

Too chicken to take this leap. Still struggling to get on the graded book train …Had a Walking Dead 1 Neal Adams book signed by him in person for $100, and then realized that I didnt have a COA, so how would I prove anything to anyone. Learnt an expensive lesson …

Just curious regarding Miles future UF4 growth would you consider Spiderman 1 Hip Hop 9.8 as way to play the uptrend for Miles?

Sure not his first appearance but for $500 buy in you have iconic cover that hip hop fans…sneaker heads…comic collectors of younger age group would say thats one of best Miles covers.

Exactly. It’d be like buying up bitcoin, sure you can make a lot of money but your risks are much higher at such a higher asking price. Too many other crypto coins out there to make you way more money…

There are available original comic book art options from the up and coming artists that cost about the same as some modern variant comics i.e. in the $500 - 1000 range. Case in point - I am collecting this page from a fellow collector today!

Thanks for the great insights. I have a been a comic book fan since I was kid, but never thought of it as an investment. I shudder at the books I destroyed, gave away, lost over my lifetime, because I didnt know about collecting or speculating. The last ten years, I have been more active in the collection/spec game, but am still very late to the game. This is addition to my regular job. So, while thankfully not hurting financially, and after many, many bumps in the spec game, I am still very careful in how I spec - more on the low risk side. I’ve lucked out on a few books - I found the bagged UF4 in a $ sale, and picked it up just because I thought the book must be something because it was bagged. Didnt know it was Miles, and wasn’t big on Miles, because I think (and still do) that Peter Parker IS Spider-man (Marvel surprised me here !).
So your (and others on this site) insights are really helpful to me ! Thanks again !

I would prefer to go with miles morales spiderman 1 animation variant 9.8 for the tie-in with the spider-verse animation movies.

P.S. I dont own a copy of the animation variant.

But not at the same price as UF4 right ? (Ignorant question)

I think the Hip-Hop covers were in demand irrespective of the character; found an X-23/DMX hip-hop cover for a buck.

I think the problem with the Eternals is Marvel wanted to appeal to too many people. They need to find a director and writer that knows comic books inside and out and specialize in action/adventure/si-fi type movies. There are also more Eternals that can be introduced that may be more interesting and fun.

At this point I think full market value for Bllodstone #1 is still not too bad. With how much she has been used the past couple of years I think she is a shoe in for the MCU. that is a good book to get right now.Once anything becomes official forget about it.
