Poyo's Spec & Drek for June 16th, 2021

Welcome to this weeks spec and drek. This is where we pick the winners each week we (or shall I say myself) think will be spec worthy, a great read or just cool looking art on the cover. I also dive into the pesky drek, the book you should probably avoid if you can or perhaps not invest so heavily into.

Marvel Picks

I actually enjoyed the last Momoko Demon Days. So Demon Days Mariko #1 makes the cut in a book worthy of picking up. Lots of covers for this one, you’ll have to pick the one you like the most and TFAW still has some of the ratios available.

Demon Days Mariko #1

For you Rose Besch fans, there’s the new Miles Morales Spider-Man #27 (Besch Spider-Man Villains Variant) out this week. Love or hate it, her Silk #2 Ratio is still doing quite well on the secondary. This one isn’t going to be so hard to grab though since it’s open order variant.

Miles Morales Spider-Man #27 (Besch Spider-Man Villains Variant)

Star Wars #14 War of the Bounty Hunters. Just buy 2 of every War of the Bounty Hunters to save yourself the headache (I am) when a new character makes their way into one of the book and breaks the interwebs.

Star Wars #14 (Byrne Pride Variant)
Star Wars #14 (Sprouse Lucasfilm 50th Variant)
Star Wars #14 (Rodriguez Variant)
Star Wars #14 (Christopher Action Figure Variant)

Star Wars #14 War of the Bounty Hunters

Venom #35 (#200 Legacy) ends the Cates run for this title and there’s a surprise new Venom. Oh, was I not suppose to say that yet? It’s not all that surprising though. You’ll find out soon enough either here with some spoilers or elsewhere on the internet I’m sure.

Lots of covers and variants for this one. If you can’t choose, always bet on Cover A!

Venom #35 (200th Issue)

DC Picks

Legends of the Dark Knight #2 (Cover A). I loved the first volume oh so long ago in my youth so I’m board with this new volume.

Nightwing #81 makes my job easy since this one is already selling for around $15 on pre-sales on the secondary. Probably due to Heartless first full appearance I believe along with Dick’s sister, etc. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, I’m not keeping up with Nightwing, he’s just another dead Robin to me, hehe!

Indie and Small Publisher Picks

Fans of Usagi Yojimbo will want to grab their copies of Usagi Yojimbo #20 which introduces a new character.

The best Star Wars High Republic title still in my opinion.

Star Wars High Republic Adventures #5 is out this week. A must pickup despite Yoda looking rather odd on the main cover.

Radiant Black #5 comes out this week after the last issue left us with more questions than answers but this issue seems to setup something entirely different than what I would expect. There’s a bunch of firsts in this one as well. So for you people onboard, hang tight, you’re probably gonna like this issue.

Radiant Black #5 (Cover B - Greco)

Radiant Black #5 (Cover A - Doaly)

Geiger #1 (4th Ptg Cover A) is just a new color shade but I really dig this cover.

Geiger #1 (4th Ptg Cover A)

Notthingham #4 is already sold out at all retailers I checked, at least the major players but you can still grab the Nottingham #4 (of 5) (2nd Ptg) if you missed the first printing as it’s already selling for $10 and up on pre-sales. There’s also a Notthingham #1 3rd Printing out, good luck finding these. Already being listed in the $15 to $30 range themselves.

Now on with the dreaded “drek” pick, every writer and artists worst nightmare when it comes to selling their hard work.

The book(s) to avoid or not fall victim to in buying at inflated prices, whether it’s false demand, pump and dump or out of FOMO.

Liefeld makes this too easy. There’s just so many flaws with this cover, I’m not gonna even bother. Why is Marvel paying this guy to do covers? Why are shops even ordering this complete garbage?

I think we should all name the flaws we see.

1.) Shield is oval, or football shape.

Deadpool’s elbow is a total mess of creation.

3.) Aren’t they both the same height (6’2”)?

Lmao that’s crazy ready the height description for both and the drawing is completely off. Cap looks like hes 275 or so. I love how Rob doesnt differentiate line weight in the inking process. And how he hides mistakes with the black blotches.

Deadpool’s sword is comically small.

He probably inked in caps hand/arm first then adjusted the length. Hes like JRJR progressively getting worse.

That’s not what I’ve heard!

Poor Cap still has his lemon-shaped shield.

At least those drawings look complete. His art now looks so rushed or half assed. The detail is missing. The colorist does the heavy lifting.

Hi, my name is Rob Liefeld and not only can I not draw feet but I cannot for the life of me learn how to draw circles.

He is the Henry Ford of comic artists: he can draw any character as long as they don’t have feet, have pouches, unphysical limbs, and swords and guns. If he drew Magik… she’d have to have a gun.

More so than the art, that typesetting for my OCD with the letter “N” makes it read “Densities”. Stupid layout, not to mention the anatomy issues…

Plz, plz, plz spoiler tags. I got spoiled on this issue from this post a few days ago. I was staying out of the Nightwing thread purposely until I read this.

Oh, you got served, @agentpoyo !!

if you dont want spoilers, than dont click on threads with spec in the title.

Spec =/= blatant spoilers. Something like “First full appearance of Heartless along with an unexpected revelation…” is equally affective at driving home the point that this can be speculated to be a key/hot book.

I know, you want to flip the book I GET IT, but, believe it or not some of us enjoy the read and like being surprised.

From what I can tell cheapest copy of cover A on the bay is now $30.

Hope everyone secured copies through TFAW or other means! Didn’t see any on shelves yesterday.
